New Year blessings for friends and family (2027)

A New Year blessing is a short prayer for someone, asking God to be with them in the year ahead. Send it by text, tuck it in a card or say it over the people at your table. Here's a New Year blessing for 2027 you can send now:

"Happy New Year, [Name]. Praying God is close to you in 2027, on the big days and the boring ones."

Below are 40 short New Year blessings and prayers, for friends, family, your small group, a new parent and anyone who had a hard year or is grieving, including five based on the old blessing from Numbers 6.

A New Year blessing

For New Year's Day (Friday, January 1, 2027), a family dinner or the first gathering of the year. Read it aloud over the people you love, or copy it into a card.

A New Year blessing to say over your people

May God meet you on January 2nd, when the party's over and the year is real.

May He give you work that matters, rest that restores you and friends who stay. May He be near on the ordinary Tuesdays and the hard phone calls, at the kitchen table and in the waiting room. Where this year brings joy, may you notice it. Where it brings grief, may you not carry it alone.

And when you look back next December, may you see His kindness all over it. Amen.

Short New Year blessings for anyone

Short enough for a text, a group chat or the bottom of a card. Send one just before midnight on Thursday, December 31, or on New Year's Day.

Happy New Year. May 2027 bring you one answered prayer you'll never forget.

May this year hold more good surprises than you expect, and grace for the prayers still waiting.

Wishing you a blessed new year: good sleep, good friends and God close in all of it.

A happy New Year prayer

God, the year has turned and the confetti is still on the floor. You were faithful in the year we just finished, and I'm grateful. I'm starting this one glad, and I'm starting it with You. Bless everyone I love in 2027. Amen.

New Year blessings for friends

For the friend who drove you to the airport at 5 a.m., the one you've known since college and the one you only made this year. Swap in their name and send it.

Happy New Year, [Name]. I thank God for you more than I tell you. May 2027 be kind to you.

May God give you a year of long dinners, honest talks and laughing until it hurts.

Praying God moves on the thing you've been waiting for. Happy New Year.

My New Year blessing for you: rest when you need it, courage when you need it and good coffee always.

Whatever 2027 brings, friend, you won't face it alone. God's with you, and so am I.

Send one, not fifty

A blessing sent to one person with their name in it means more than the same line pasted into every chat. Pick three people tonight who would be glad to hear from you, and write to each one.

A New Year prayer for friends

Before you send the texts, pray for the friends you're sending them to. Put in their names and what you know they're facing.

A New Year prayer for my friends

Holy Spirit, I'm bringing You my friends as this year starts. [Name], who's starting a new job. [Name], who's still waiting on test results. [Name], who carried everyone else last year and never asked for help.

Be their comfort and their courage. Give them good news when it's time, patience when it isn't and people who look out for them the way they look out for others. Thank You for every one of them. Amen.

New Year blessings for family

For parents, grandparents, siblings, grown children and your spouse.

For parents and grandparents

For your spouse

Happy New Year, love. I'd choose this life with you again. May God bless our home in 2027.

New Year blessings for your small group

For the group chat on New Year's Day, or to read at your first meeting in January. For a longer prayer to open that meeting, see our New Year prayers.

Happy New Year, everyone. You prayed me through more this year than you know. I can't wait to see what God does among us in 2027.

May God keep us honest, kind and praying for each other all year. See you [Tuesday].

A blessing for our group: more answered prayers, fewer missed weeks and grace for every hard thing we bring.

Thanking God for every one of you tonight. May this be a year we grow closer to Him and to each other.

New Year blessings for someone after a hard year

For the friend who lost a job, got a diagnosis, went through a divorce or just barely got through. Don't tell them this year will be better. You don't know that. Tell them you're with them and that you're praying.

You got through a year I wouldn't wish on anyone. Praying 2027 hands you a few easy days. I'm here.

No pressure to have a happy new year. Just praying for a quieter one, and that you feel God close.

May God find you in this new year with rest, help and small good things you didn't see coming.

You made it through this year. That counts. Praying for you as the new one starts.

Praying the new year brings answers, or at least peace while you wait. Love you.

New Year blessings for a new parent

For the friend whose year changed completely when the baby arrived, or who is about to find out how much it will.

Happy first New Year as a [mom, dad, family of four]. May God give you sleep, help and so much joy.

Praying for little [Name] and for you this year: health, growth and grace on the long nights.

May God bless your little one's first full year, and give you patience for every 3 a.m. wake-up.

Happy New Year to the newest family I know. May your home be full of laughter, help and the peace of God.

New Year blessings for someone who is grieving

For many grieving people, New Year's Eve can be as hard as Christmas, sometimes harder. It can feel like leaving the person they lost behind in the old year. Keep it short, say their person's name if you can and don't expect an answer. Our prayers for grief have more for the weeks ahead.

Thinking of you as the year turns without [Name]. Praying God holds you close tonight. No need to reply.

I know a new year can feel like leaving them behind. You're not. Praying for you.

May God carry you gently into this new year. I'll keep saying [Name]'s name with you.

New Year's Eve is hard when someone's missing. Praying for comfort tonight. Want me to come over?

May the God of all comfort be close to you every day of 2027, especially the hard ones.

When grief gets heavier

If grief has become something heavier, like not sleeping or eating, or wishing you weren't here, please talk to a doctor, counselor or pastor this week. You can call or text 988, the US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time.

The Numbers 6 blessing for the New Year

In Numbers 6, God gave Aaron and the priests words to bless the people of Israel. It's sometimes called the Aaronic or priestly blessing, and churches still say it at the end of services. It makes a beautiful New Year blessing as it is.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
Numbers 6:24–26 (KJV)
Yahweh bless you, and keep you. Yahweh make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. Yahweh lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24–26 (WEB)

The first is the King James Version; the second is the World English Bible, which uses God's name, Yahweh, where the King James has "the LORD." To "make his face shine" on someone means to look at them with delight. To "lift up his countenance" means to turn toward them, paying full attention.

Five New Year blessings based on Numbers 6

These are paraphrases, not Bible quotations. They follow the shape of the priestly blessing in everyday words, so they're easy to text.

May the Lord bless you and keep you safe all through this new year.

May God smile on you in 2027 and be kind to you on every ordinary day of it.

May the Lord turn toward you this year, give you His full attention and give you peace.

As this year begins: God bless you, God keep you, God's face shine on you, God's peace be yours.

God bless you and keep you, [Name]. May He smile on you, be kind to you and give you peace all year long.

How to write your own New Year blessing

The blessings above are starting points. A line or two you wrote yourself, for one person, is better than anything copied.

  1. 1

    Start with their name

"Happy New Year, [Name]." It turns a greeting into a message meant for them.

  2. 2

Thank God for one thing about them

"I thank God for the soup you left on my porch in October." A detail like that is what makes it theirs.

  3. 3

    Pray for one thing ahead

The new job, the treatment, the move, the baby, the empty house. Name it: "Praying God gives you peace as you start at the new school."

  4. 4

Promise what God promises, not more

God promises to be with His people. He doesn't promise a smooth year. "May God be close to you" is honest. "This will be your best year yet" isn't yours to promise.

  5. 5

Pray it before you send it

Read it to God first, then send it. A blessing is a prayer the other person gets to see.

Thou crownest the year with thy goodness.
Psalm 65:11 (KJV)

From a harvest psalm: God's goodness is what makes a year good. A fine line to write at the top of a card.

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Romans 15:13 (KJV)

Paul's own blessing for the church in Rome. It works just as well for a friend in January.

Questions people ask

What are some good New Year's blessings?

"Praying God is close to you in 2027, on the big days and the boring ones" and "May the Lord bless you and keep you safe all through this new year" are two. The best ones are short and fit the person: a new baby, a hard year, a job they're starting.

How do you wish someone a happy new year with God's blessings?

Say happy new year, then add one line of prayer for them: "Happy New Year, [Name]. Praying God gives you rest and joy in 2027." If you know what they're facing, name it.

What is the best message for the New Year?

A personal one. Name one thing you thank God for about them and one thing you're asking Him to do for them this year. Two honest sentences will get read twice.

What do you say instead of Happy New Year to a Christian friend?

Many Christians say "Have a blessed New Year" or "God bless you in 2027." You can also send a line of Numbers 6:24, "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee," with their name in front of it.

What is a good Bible verse for a New Year blessing?

Numbers 6:24–26 is the classic. Psalm 65:11 ("Thou crownest the year with thy goodness") and Romans 15:13 ("Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing") also work well in a card.

Can anyone give a blessing, or only a pastor?

Anyone can bless someone by praying for God's good for them, and Christians are told to bless even people who mistreat them (1 Peter 3:9). Some churches reserve a formal blessing in a service for clergy, but a blessing in a text or a card is simply a prayer.
