How to pray for someone who is sick

To pray for someone who is sick, ask God honestly for their healing, and also for comfort, courage and good care from their doctors and nurses. Pray for the specific thing they're facing, like surgery, test results or a long recovery, and let them know you're praying. Prayer goes alongside medical care, never in place of it.

A prayer for someone who is sick

If you're looking for one prayer for someone who is sick, start here. Use their name and pray it slowly.

A prayer for healing

Lord, I bring [Name] to You. You see their body and everything that's wrong with it, and You see their fear too. Please heal them. Give them rest that actually restores, and relief from pain.

Guide the people caring for them, and give them wisdom and steady hands. When the days are long, stay close, and let [Name] feel that they are not alone. I trust them to Your care. Amen.

Short prayers for healing

One line each, for when you think of them during the day.

  • Lord, bring healing to [Name]'s body, and peace to their mind. Amen.
  • Father, ease their pain and give them a good night's sleep. Amen.
  • Jesus, be near to them in the waiting and the worry. Amen.
  • God, give their doctors wisdom and their body strength. Amen.
  • Lord, hold them up when they're too tired to hold on. Amen.

Prayer before surgery

Surgery brings a particular kind of fear: putting yourself completely in someone else's hands. These prayers name that.

The night before surgery

Father, tomorrow is a big day, and [Name] is nervous. Quiet their mind tonight and give them real sleep. Thank You for the skill of the surgeon and the care of the nurses. Guide every hand in that room. Bring [Name] safely through and into a gentle recovery. Amen.

In the waiting room

Lord, we're sitting here watching the clock. We can't do anything for [Name] right now except trust You. Be with them in that operating room. Keep the team sharp and calm. And while we wait, keep our hearts steady. Amen.

For a good recovery

God, thank You that the surgery is over. Now give [Name]'s body what it needs to heal. Help them be patient with slow progress, keep infection away, and give them people who will help without being asked. Amen.

A prayer while waiting on test results

Waiting can be harder than the news itself. Pray for peace in the not-knowing.

Waiting for results

Lord, we're waiting to hear, and every hour feels long. You already know what the results will say, and none of it surprises You. Give [Name] peace that doesn't depend on good news. Keep their imagination from running ahead. Whatever we learn, be with us in it. Amen.

A prayer for someone in the hospital

Hospitals are noisy, lonely and strange. Pray for comfort as much as for treatment.

For a hospital stay

Jesus, [Name] is in a hospital bed tonight, away from home and everything familiar. Comfort them. Let the beeping machines and the interrupted sleep not wear them down. Send them kind nurses, clear answers and visitors who bring light into the room. Amen.

Prayer for chronic illness and long recovery

When an illness lasts months or years, the prayers change. People need endurance, and they need not to be forgotten.

For chronic illness

Father, [Name] has been sick for a long time now, and the people around them don't always remember. You do. Meet them in the bad days and the slightly better ones. Give them strength for each day, not the whole year. Bring relief where there's been none, and friends who stay. Amen.

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.
Psalm 73:26 (KJV)

Praying Psalm 73:26

God, [Name]'s body is failing them, and some days their heart feels like it's failing too. Be their strength when they have none. Be what they have when it feels like they've lost so much. Amen.

Prayers for caregivers, doctors and nurses, and a sick child

Illness touches everyone around the patient. Remember them too.

For a caregiver

Lord, thank You for [Name], who is caring for someone they love. They're giving so much, often with no one noticing. Give them rest. Give them patience on the hard days and permission to ask for help. Remind them that they matter too. Amen.

For the doctors and nurses

God, thank You for the people who spend their lives caring for the sick. Give [Name]'s doctors clear thinking and good judgment. Give the nurses energy for long shifts and kindness that doesn't run out. Bless their work with good outcomes. Amen.

For a child who is sick

Jesus, You welcomed children and held them close. Hold [Name] close now. Take away their fear, ease their pain and let them still find moments to laugh. Give their parents strength and sleep, and wisdom for every decision they have to make. Amen.

When healing doesn't come

Sometimes we pray with everything in us, and the person doesn't get better. That isn't a sign that anyone prayed wrong or didn't have enough faith.

Paul asked God three times to take away what he called a thorn in the flesh, and it wasn't taken away. What he heard instead was a promise that God's grace would be enough.

My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

When the answer isn't what we hoped

Lord, we asked for healing, and it hasn't come. We don't understand, and we're not going to pretend we do. Stay with [Name]. Give them comfort, freedom from pain and the deep peace of knowing they are Yours. And hold the rest of us as we keep loving them through this. Amen.

If someone you love is facing the end of their life, our prayers for grief may help in the days ahead.

What to say to someone who is sick, and what not to say

Most people mean well. A few phrases still land badly, especially when someone is scared or exhausted.

Things that help

  • "I'm so sorry you're going through this."
  • "I've been praying for you. Is there something specific you'd like me to pray for?"
  • "You don't need to reply. I just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you."
  • "I'm dropping off dinner Thursday. Any foods to avoid?"

Things to avoid

  • "If you just have enough faith, you'll be healed." It puts the burden of their illness on them.
  • "Everything happens for a reason." It can sound like their suffering is part of a tidy plan, when it simply hurts.
  • Medical advice or miracle cures. Leave that to their care team.
  • Stories about someone else who had it worse, or who died. Keep the focus on them.

Texts you can send

Thinking of you today and praying. No need to write back.

Praying for your surgery tomorrow morning. I'll be thinking of you all day.

Practical ways to show up

Prayer and practical care belong together. Here's what tends to help most.

  1. 1

    Offer something specific

"Can I take the kids Saturday?" is easier to accept than "Let me know if you need anything."

  2. 2

    Bring food that's easy

Meals in disposable containers, labeled with what's in them. Ask about restrictions first.

  3. 3

Visit briefly, or not at all

Ask before you come. Keep visits short unless they ask you to stay. Sick people get tired quickly.

  4. 4

Keep showing up after week two

Help pours in at first and then fades. Put a reminder on your calendar to check in a month from now, and again after that.

  5. 5

    Ask before sharing their news

Before you ask others to pray, check how much they're comfortable with people knowing. Our guide on asking for prayer has ideas for sharing gently.

Prayer isn't a substitute for care

Keep encouraging your friend to follow their doctors' advice. If something seems urgent, help them get medical care right away, then keep praying.

Questions people ask

How do you pray for someone who is sick?

Name the person and what they're facing, ask God plainly for healing, and ask for comfort, courage and wisdom for their doctors. Short, honest prayers are enough.

What is a good prayer before surgery?

Ask God to give the patient peace, to guide the surgeon's hands and the whole team's judgment, and to bring a smooth recovery. Many people are comforted by a prayer they can read the night before or in the waiting room.

Should I pray instead of seeing a doctor?

No. Prayer and medical care belong together. Christians have long seen doctors, nurses and medicine as among the ways God cares for us, so keep every appointment and follow your care team's advice while you pray.

Why doesn't God always heal when we pray?

Nobody can fully answer that, and it's okay to say so. The Bible is honest that faithful people still got sick, and it promises that God stays near in suffering even when healing doesn't come the way we asked.

What should I text a friend who is sick?

Something short that doesn't need a reply, like "Thinking of you and praying today. No need to write back." Offer one concrete kind of help rather than a general "let me know if you need anything."
