A prayer for someone having surgery
If you need one prayer for someone having an operation, this is it. Say their name and take your time.
A prayer for someone having surgery
Lord, [Name] is having surgery, and soon they'll be asleep while strangers work on them. Give them peace that goes deeper than the nerves. Be with them as they drift off and as they wake up.
Give the surgeon a clear eye and the team good judgment in every call. Let them see clearly and work carefully. Bring [Name] through this safely and into a good recovery. And be with everyone who loves them, waiting for the phone to ring. Amen.
What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
Short prayers for a successful surgery and recovery
One line each. Pray one at a red light, in a meeting or in the minute before they wheel them back.
- Lord, give [Name] peace before surgery and a good recovery after. Amen.
- Father, steady the surgeon's hands today. Amen.
- Jesus, be with [Name] while they sleep and when they wake. Amen.
- God, keep the whole team attentive, careful and kind. Amen.
- Holy Spirit, calm the people in the waiting room. Amen.
- Lord, let this surgery do what it's meant to do. Amen.
- Lord, let the pain ease and the healing start. Amen.
- Lord, they call it routine, but it doesn't feel routine to [Name]. Be with them today. Amen.
Prayer the night before surgery
The night before is often the hardest part: no food after midnight, an early alarm and a mind that won't switch off. These prayers name that.
For someone having surgery tomorrow
Father, [Name] has surgery in the morning and is probably lying awake right now. Turn down the noise in their head. Keep them from rehearsing everything that could go wrong. Let them actually sleep, and wake up steady. Thank You for the people who will care for them tomorrow. Amen.
If you're the one having surgery
Lord, my bag is packed and the alarm is set for an hour I don't usually see. I'm nervous, and You know it. I can't control tomorrow, so I'm handing it to You. Let me lie down in peace and sleep. Be with me when I go under and when I wake up. Amen.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Prayer the morning of surgery
Pre-op can be a strange mix of waiting and rushing: forms, gowns, an IV, the same questions three times. If you're there, ask whether they'd like you to pray with them. Keep it short enough to finish before the nurse comes back.
The morning of surgery
God, today's the day. [Name] is checking in, answering questions and trying to stay calm. Go with them through every hallway and every door. Give the staff a good morning: rested, focused and on time. Keep [Name] safe from start to finish. Amen.
At the bedside in pre-op
Jesus, here we are. [Name] is about to go back, and we're holding hands for a minute first. Give them Your peace. Guide every person in that room. We'll be right here. Amen.
Prayer during surgery, for the waiting room
Once the doors close, there's nothing to do but wait. Waiting rooms are full of people staring at screens and coffee cups. Praying gives the waiting somewhere to go.
While we wait
Lord, [Name] is in surgery right now, and we're watching the board for their number to change. You're in that operating room. Be close to them. Keep the team focused and working well together. And while we sit here, stop us from writing the worst ending in our heads. Help us be good company to each other. Amen.
When it's taking longer than they said
God, it's been longer than they told us, and every minute feels heavy. We don't know why, and our imaginations are filling in the gaps. You know exactly what's happening in there. Give the surgeon wisdom for whatever they've found. Give us patience and peace until someone comes through that door. Amen.
A few things that help in the waiting room
Charge your phone, bring a snack and give the staff the best number to reach you. Bring a sweater, too: waiting rooms run cold.
Prayer for the surgeons, nurses and medical team
A surgery involves far more people than the surgeon. Pray for all of them by role.
For the surgical team
Father, these people trained for years to do this work. Thank You for them. Guide the surgeon's decisions. Give the anesthesiologist careful attention, and the nurses and techs clear communication. Keep fatigue and distraction out of that room. Let them do their best work for [Name] today. Amen.
For the nurses after surgery
Holy Spirit, be with the nurses who will care for [Name] through the night. Give them patience, good instincts and enough time to notice the small things. Let them be gentle when [Name] is groggy and in pain. Amen.
Prayer for recovery after surgery
Surgery is one day. Recovery can be weeks. Keep praying after the good news comes, because that's often when people need it most. If recovery turns into a longer illness, our healing prayers for a friend may help.
Right after surgery
God, thank You that [Name] is out of surgery. Thank You for the team and for the news we just heard. Now help them wake up gently. Ease their pain and the nausea, and let the wound heal clean. Give them rest tonight, even in a hospital bed. Amen.
For a slow recovery at home
Lord, [Name] is home, and recovery is slower than anyone hoped. Some days are two steps forward, one step back. Give them patience with the exercises that hurt and the days that don't feel like progress. Send friends who drop off dinner and don't stay too long. Give them a little more strength each day. Amen.
For pain and frustration
Jesus, [Name] is sore and tired of being sore. They're tired of asking for help, too. Ease the pain. Help the medicine work and let them sleep. Remind them that resting is part of healing, and that needing help doesn't make them a burden. Amen.
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
If recovery brings a low mood
Low mood after surgery is common, but if hopelessness hangs on, tell their doctor. If they talk about not wanting to live, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) in the US.
When the news is hard
Sometimes the surgeon comes out with news nobody wanted: a complication, a diagnosis, a surgery that didn't fix what it was supposed to. Honest prayer is still prayer. You don't need to tidy it up.
When it didn't go as we hoped
Lord, we prayed for a good outcome, and this isn't it. We're scared, and we don't understand. Stay with [Name]. Give the doctors clarity about what comes next and give us the courage to hear it. Don't let any of us face this alone. Amen.
For a family waiting on hard news
God, the room went quiet when the doctor sat down. Now there are decisions we never wanted to make. Give us wisdom, and kindness toward each other while we make them. Hold [Name] in Your care tonight, whatever comes. Amen.
When they tell you to say goodbye
God, they've told us to come in and say goodbye. We can't. Help us anyway. Give us the words, or let our hands say what we can't. Hold [Name], and hold us. Amen.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
For a longer illness, our guide on how to pray for someone who is sick has prayers for chronic illness, caregivers and when healing doesn't come. If you've lost someone, prayers for grief may help.
Prayer for surgery for a friend or loved one
When it's your friend, your child, your parent or your spouse, the fear feels different. These prayers fit those moments.
For a friend having surgery
Father, my friend [Name] goes in for surgery [tomorrow]. I can't sit in the waiting room, but I can sit with You. Calm them on the drive in. Give their family good coffee and good news. Let me know how to be useful next week, not just this week. Amen.
For a child having surgery
Jesus, [Name] is so small to be wearing a hospital gown. Take away their fear. Let the nurses make them smile and let them fall asleep without panic. Guide every person caring for them. Bring them back to our arms soon, and give us steady faces while we wait. Amen.
For an older parent
Lord, Mom [or Dad] is having surgery, and at their age every operation feels bigger. Protect their heart and lungs under anesthesia. Clear the confusion quickly when they wake. Give us wisdom about the care they'll need afterward, and grace with each other as we figure it out. Amen.
For a husband or wife
Father, the person I share my life with is in surgery, and I'm in a waiting room by myself. Be with [Name] where I can't be. Guide the team. Hold me together until I see their face again. Amen.
What to text, and how to help, before and after surgery
A short text tells them they're not going in alone. Keep it light on questions, so they don't feel they owe you a reply. Send it the night before, because phones usually get put away in pre-op.
The night before
Praying for you tonight and tomorrow morning. You're in good hands, and in God's. No need to reply.
Praying you sleep well tonight and wake up calm. I'll be praying at 9.
Thinking of you. Praying for steady hands for your surgeon and peace for you.
The day of
Praying right now. Text when you can, or have someone text me.
To the family in the waiting room
Praying for [Name] and for all of you in the waiting room today.
After surgery
Out of surgery. Thank God. Rest up, no need to reply.
Still praying for your recovery. Can I bring dinner Thursday?
How's the pain today, honestly? Praying it eases.
How to help
- 1
Offer the ride
Most people can't drive themselves home after anesthesia. Offer to drive, or to sit with the family.
- 2
Take a meal for the week after
The first days are busy with visitors. Day five, when the help thins out, is when dinner means most.
- 3
Check in again later
Set a reminder for a week and a month after surgery, and send one more text.
What not to say
- "It'll be fine." You don't know that, and they don't either. "I'm praying for you" is honest.
- Stories about surgeries that went badly. Save them, or skip them entirely.
- Medical advice. Leave that to their surgical team.
Praying together at the same time
One of the simplest ways to carry someone through surgery is to ask a few people to pray at the time it starts: "Surgery's Tuesday at 9 a.m. Pray with us." A patient who knows five friends are praying at 9 often feels less alone going in.
- 1
Ask the patient first
Check what they're comfortable sharing and who with. Some people want their whole church praying; some want three friends.
- 2
Share the time and what to pray for
Give the start time (and time zone), roughly how long it should take and two or three specific things: calm nerves, the surgeon, a quick recovery.
- 3
Name one person for updates
One person sends the update when it's over, so the family isn't answering every message.
- 4
Keep praying through recovery
Post again in a week, and again a month later. Our guides on asking for prayer and starting a prayer chain have more ideas, and prayers for strength help in the long weeks after.
Prayer isn't a substitute for medical care
Keep encouraging them to follow the surgical team's instructions before and after the operation. If something seems wrong during recovery, like a fever, new pain or trouble breathing, call their doctor or get medical help right away, then keep praying.

Questions people ask
What can I pray before my own surgery?
Tell God plainly that you're nervous, hand Him what you can't control and ask for peace, a careful team and a safe recovery. The prayer "If you're the one having surgery" on this page is written for the night before.
How do you wish someone well before surgery?
Send something short that asks nothing back, like "Praying for you tomorrow morning. No need to reply." Tell them when you'll be praying, and offer one practical thing, like a meal the week after.
What Bible verse is a prayer for surgery?
Psalm 56:3, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee," is short enough to pray in pre-op. Isaiah 41:10, Psalm 4:8 and Psalm 23:4 are also often prayed before an operation.
What blessing can I say before an operation?
Try "May the Lord give you peace tonight, steady the hands that care for you tomorrow and be with you every minute in between." Keep it short, and say their name.
What is the most powerful prayer before surgery?
No set of words works like a key. The prayers that help most name the person, the surgery and what you're asking for: peace, skill, a safe recovery. God hears a two-line prayer from pre-op as fully as a long one.
Should prayer replace what the doctors say?
No. Follow the surgical team's instructions, including fasting, medication and recovery advice, and pray as well. Christians have long seen medicine and skilled hands as one of the ways God cares for us.
