A healing prayer for a friend
For a sick friend, pray this one first. Put their name in and go slowly.
A healing prayer for a friend
Lord, my friend [Name] is sick, and I can't fix it. You can. I'm asking You to heal them: their body, and the fear that has moved in beside the illness.
Give their doctors clear heads and good instincts. Give [Name] the kind of sleep you wake up from feeling better, and relief on the bad days. Let them feel You close in the waiting rooms and the long nights. And show me how to be a good friend through all of it, with more than words. Amen.
Text this to them:
I prayed for you this morning, that God would heal you and give you real rest. No need to reply.
Short healing prayers for a friend
One line each, for the moment they come to mind. Each one also works as a text.
- Lord, heal [Name], and give them real rest tonight. Amen.
- Jesus, be close to [Name] in that hospital bed. Amen.
- God, bring [Name] a full recovery, one good day at a time. Amen.
- Father, give [Name]'s doctors clear answers and steady hands. Amen.
- Holy Spirit, settle [Name]'s fear while they wait. Amen.
- Lord, ease [Name]'s pain today, even a little. Amen.
- God, make [Name]'s body strong again, and keep their spirit strong now. Amen.
- Jesus, let [Name] know they aren't facing this alone. Amen.
- Father, heal what the medicine can't reach. Amen.
Prayer for a friend with a new diagnosis
The first days after bad news are a blur of new words, appointments and fear. Pray for clear heads as much as for healing.
The day of the diagnosis
Father, [Name] got news today that changed everything. Their head is full of words they didn't know a week ago. Settle them. Help them hear what the doctors actually said, not the worst version their mind keeps replaying at 2 a.m. Heal their body, and give them someone to sit with them tonight. Amen.
Before the treatment plan
God, decisions are coming: which doctor, which treatment, what to tell the kids [or their parents]. Give [Name] wisdom and good advice, and protect them from people with strong opinions and no responsibility. Make the next step clear, even if the whole plan isn't yet. And heal them, Lord. Amen.
When they're scared
Jesus, [Name] is scared, and they're trying not to show it. You never told frightened people to hide it. Sit with them in it. Let them say the honest thing out loud to someone safe. Hold them up, the way You promised, and give their body every chance to heal. Amen.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Text this to them:
Just heard. I'm so sorry. I'm praying for you tonight, and I'm not going anywhere.
Praying God gives you wisdom for every decision this week, and good people to help you make them.
You don't have to be brave with me. I'm praying for you, and I'm here.
Prayer for a friend with cancer, or in the hospital
Treatment days and hospital stays are long, tiring and lonely. Pray for the hours in between as much as for the results.
On a chemo day
Lord, [Name] is in the infusion chair today, watching the drip and trying not to think about what comes after. Let the medicine do its work on the cancer and spare the rest of them. Settle their stomach. Help them face the mirror if their hair is going. Get them home safely, and give them a quiet evening on the couch. Heal them, Lord. Amen.
For a friend in the hospital
Father, [Name] is in a hospital bed tonight, with machines beeping and someone checking on them every few hours. Give them sleep in spite of it. Bless the nurses on the night shift with patience and sharp eyes. Send visitors who bring light and know when to leave. Heal them, and bring them home soon. Amen.
Text this to them:
Thinking of you in that chair today. Praying it works and the side effects stay mild. Can I drive you next time?
Praying you get some sleep tonight in spite of the beeping. Want a visit tomorrow, or would you rather rest?
Prayer for a friend waiting on test results
Waiting for a scan, a biopsy or a phone call can be harder than the news itself.
While they wait
Lord, [Name] is waiting for a call that could go either way. Every time their phone buzzes, their stomach drops. Give them a peace that holds whatever the results say. Fill the hours with ordinary good things: a decent meal, a funny show, a friend at the door. And please, let the news be good. Amen.
The night before the appointment
God, tomorrow [Name] sits in that office and hears what the scan [or biopsy] found. Give them sleep tonight. Be in that room before they get there. Help the doctor speak clearly and kindly, and help [Name] remember the questions they wanted to ask. Whatever is said, don't let them hear it alone. Amen.
Text this to them:
Praying for peace while you wait, and for good news. Want company when the call comes?
Thinking of you before tomorrow's appointment. Praying you sleep tonight and hear it all clearly.
Prayer for a friend before surgery
We have a whole page of prayers for someone having surgery, from the night before to the waiting room and recovery. Here is one to pray for a friend.
Before their surgery
Father, [Name] goes into surgery [tomorrow morning]. Calm them as they're wheeled in. Guide the surgeon's hands, and keep the whole team alert and careful. Bring them through safely, and let the first face they see when they wake up be a kind one. Amen.
Text this to them:
Praying for you and your surgical team tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you all morning.
Prayer for a friend with chronic illness
When an illness lasts for years, the casseroles stop and the questions dry up. A friend who keeps praying, and keeps saying so, matters more than they can tell you.
For a friend who's been sick a long time
God, [Name] has been sick for so long that people have stopped asking. I don't want to be one of them. Heal them, Lord. And while we wait on You, give them enough strength for today, and a few hours each week when they feel like themselves. Don't let them disappear behind their illness. Amen.
On a flare-up day
Jesus, today is a bad day for [Name]. The pain is up and their plans are cancelled again. Ease what hurts. Lift the guilt they feel about cancelling, and the loneliness that comes with it. Let them rest without feeling lazy. And tomorrow, bring a better day. Amen.
For an illness nobody can see
Father, [Name]'s illness doesn't show on the outside, so people assume they're fine. You see all of it. Give them doctors who listen and believe them, and friends who don't need proof. Bring healing to the parts of their body nobody has figured out yet. Amen.
Text this to them:
Still praying for you. I haven't forgotten, and I won't.
Sorry today's a hard one. Praying the pain eases. Don't worry about replying, or about cancelling on me.
I believe you. Praying for doctors who listen and answers that help.
Healing prayer for a friend's mental health
Depression, anxiety and other mental illness are illness too. Pray for a friend's mind with the same seriousness as their body, and encourage good care.
For a friend with depression
Lord, [Name] is in a dark place, and it's heavy. Getting out of bed is work right now. Be close to them in it. Lift the fog a little at a time. Give them a doctor or counselor who helps, the right treatment and the strength to keep going back. Remind them they are loved, even when they can't feel it. Amen.
For a friend with anxiety
Holy Spirit, [Name]'s mind won't stop racing. Their chest is tight and the worst case feels certain. Quiet their thoughts. Slow their breathing. Heal whatever is feeding the fear, whether it's their body, their past or the pressure they're under. Give them help that works, and a quiet they didn't expect. Amen.
After a mental health crisis
Father, [Name] has come through something frightening, and I'm so thankful they're still here. Heal their mind as gently as You'd heal a broken bone. Surround them with people who check in, a care team they trust and a home that feels safe. Take away the shame. Give them a reason to look forward to next month. Amen.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.
Text this to them:
Thinking of you. You don't have to talk or be okay. I'm praying for you, and I'm around if you want company.
Praying your mind gets some quiet today. Want to go for a walk later? No pressure.
I'm so glad you're here. Praying for you every day this week.
If a friend talks about not wanting to be here
Take it seriously. Stay with them, and call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US) together, or your local emergency number. If they're a veteran, dial 988 and press 1. Praying for them and getting them help go together.
Prayer for healing and recovery for a friend
Getting better takes longer than anyone wants. Keep praying after the crisis is over, when the meals and messages tail off.
For a friend who's getting better
Lord, [Name] is on the mend, and we're grateful. Finish what You've started. Rebuild their strength day by day. Help them follow their doctor's advice when they feel well enough to overdo it. Send friends who bring food without being asked, and give [Name] joy in the small wins: the first walk outside, the first full night's sleep. Amen.
For a slow recovery
God, recovery is taking longer than anyone said it would. [Name] is tired of being tired. Help them be patient with a body that's slower than their plans, and with the rest of us who keep asking when they'll be back to normal. Heal them steadily. Help them notice progress they can't see from one week to the next. Amen.
For a friend in physical therapy
Jesus, every session hurts, and [Name] keeps showing up. Bless that. Give their therapists skill and encouragement. Strengthen their legs [or arm, or lungs] a little more each time. When they want to quit, send someone to cheer them on. Amen.
Text this to them:
So good to hear you're getting stronger. Thanking God with you, and still praying.
I know it's slow. Praying for patience and real progress this week. You're doing better than you think.
Praying for you before therapy today. Proud of you for showing up.
Prayer for healing and strength for a friend
Long illness drains more than the body. This one asks for strength to get through the day while healing comes. For more, see our prayers for strength.
For healing and strength
Holy Spirit, [Name] is worn out. Their body is fighting, and so is their heart. Pour Your strength into them where they have none left. Heal them, and while they wait for healing, carry them. Give them enough for the drive to the clinic, the plate of food they don't want, the call they've been putting off. Amen.
Text this to them:
Praying for healing, and for strength to get through today. One day at a time. I'm with you.
When healing is slow, or doesn't come
Sometimes we pray for months and a friend doesn't get better. That doesn't mean anyone prayed wrong or lacked faith. Keep praying, and keep being there.
When healing isn't coming
Lord, we've prayed for [Name] for a long time, and they aren't better. I don't understand it, and I won't pretend I do. Please stay near them. Ease their pain, keep their hope alive and let them feel loved every single day. And help me not drift away when it gets long. Amen.
Text this to them:
Still praying, still here. You don't have to be hopeful for my sake.
Our guide on praying for someone who is sick has more on praying when healing doesn't come, and if you're facing the loss of a friend, our prayers for grief may help.
Bible verses to pray for a friend's healing
Read a verse, then pray it back to God with your friend's name in it.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Praying 3 John 1:2 for a friend
Father, I want [Name] to be well. Make their body healthy again, and keep their soul healthy too: steady, honest and close to You through all of this. Amen.
John wrote this line to his friend Gaius. It's one of the few verses in the Bible written from one friend to another about their health.
The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
James is telling a church to pray for each other. He isn't saying sickness is someone's fault, or that healing depends on praying hard enough.
Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
The Gospels also tell of four friends who carried a paralyzed man to Jesus and, when they couldn't get through the crowd, opened up the roof and lowered him down (Mark 2:1–12). Praying for a sick friend is a little like that: carrying them to Jesus when they can't get there on their own.
Text this to them:
Prayed the verse John wrote to his friend for you today: that you'd be well, body and soul. Love you.
How to tell a friend you're praying for them
A message that says you prayed can mean more than you'd guess. A few things make it land well.
- 1
Keep it short, and don't ask for a reply
Sick people are tired, and their phones are full. "No need to write back" is a kindness.
- 2
Say what you prayed for
"I prayed for your scan Thursday" tells them you were paying attention. It lands in a way a general "praying for you" can't.
- 3
Ask what they'd like prayer for
It might not be the illness. It might be sleep, their kids or the bills. Our guide to asking how you can pray has gentle ways to ask.
- 4
Ask first if faith is complicated for them
"Would it be okay if I prayed for you?" Most people say yes, and they're touched to be asked.
- 5
Follow up on the day that matters
Put the surgery or appointment in your calendar and text that morning. Then check in again a week later, when the help dries up.
- 6
Keep their news private
Ask before you share their diagnosis with your small group or a prayer chain, and ask how much they want people to know.
A few ways to say it:
I prayed for you today. Is there anything specific you'd like me to pray for this week?
Thinking of you and praying. No need to reply. I'll check in again Friday.
Would it be okay if I prayed for you? I've been thinking about you a lot.
Praying for you every morning this week. And I'm bringing soup Wednesday. Any allergies?
Pair the prayer with something practical
A meal, a ride to an appointment or an hour with the kids says "I'm praying" out loud. For what to say and what to avoid, see how to pray for someone who is sick. For a friend facing something other than illness, our prayers for a friend cover everything from a new job to a hard birthday.

Questions people ask
What is the most powerful prayer for healing?
There isn't a magic formula. The Bible's own advice is simple: "pray one for another, that ye may be healed" (James 5:16). An honest prayer that names your friend and what they're facing, prayed often, is as powerful as any.
What is a simple but powerful prayer?
"Lord, heal [Name], and stay close to them while You do. Amen." Short, honest prayers that name the person are as real as long ones.
How do I pray for a friend's healing?
Name your friend, name the illness or the appointment and ask God plainly to heal them. Then pray for what surrounds it: their fear, their doctors, sleep, money and the people at home.
What is a beautiful prayer message for a sick friend?
Something short and specific they don't have to answer, like "Praying for your scan Thursday and for peace while you wait. No need to reply." Most prayers on this page come with a message like that.
How do you tell someone you're praying for their health?
Send a short message that says what you prayed for, and don't expect a reply. If faith is new or complicated for them, ask first: "Would it be okay if I prayed for you?"
Can prayer take the place of medical treatment?
No. Pray, and keep every appointment. Doctors, nurses, counselors and medicine are among the ways God cares for us. If a friend is in a mental health crisis in the US, call or text 988.
