A Christmas prayer
If you only have a minute before the day takes over, pray this one. Read it slowly, out loud if you can.
A Christmas prayer
Lord Jesus, You came quietly. No palace and no crowd, just a young mother, a tired carpenter and a feeding trough borrowed from the animals. Thank You for coming that close.
Come close again this Christmas. Be in the noise of this house and in the quiet after everyone leaves. Be with the people I love, the ones at the table and the ones I'm missing. Where there's joy, make it thankful. Where there's hurt, hold it. Help me notice You in the small things today. Amen.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
A Christmas Day prayer (for the afternoon lull)
Father, the presents are open and the dishes are stacked by the sink. Someone is asleep on the couch. Before the day slips past, thank You. Thank You for the carols this morning, for the people in this house and for the Son You gave us. Let me carry a little of today into the ordinary weeks ahead. Amen.
Short Christmas prayers
Sorted by how much time you have: a breath or a full minute.
One line
- Jesus, there's room here. Welcome. Amen.
- Lord Jesus, You came for people like me. Thank You. Amen.
- God with us, be with us today. Amen.
- Father, fill our home with Your peace this Christmas. Amen.
- Holy Spirit, quiet my heart before the doorbell rings. Amen.
- Jesus, be near everyone who is alone tonight. Amen.
One minute
A one-minute Christmas prayer
God, Christmas comes whether I'm ready or not, and this year I'm not sure I am. Thank You that Jesus didn't wait for a ready world. He came to a crowded town where there was no room.
Come into my crowded heart today. Slow me down enough to notice You. Help me listen to the people I love and be patient with the ones who wear me out. Let the joy be real, and let what we have be enough. Amen.
Traditional Christmas prayers
Christians have prayed these words at Christmas for centuries. The collect below is from the Book of Common Prayer (1662), still prayed in Anglican and Episcopal churches on Christmas Day. It asks that the birth of Jesus would make us new every day.
The Christmas Day collect (Book of Common Prayer, 1662)
Almighty God, who hast given us thy only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and as at this time to be born of a pure Virgin: Grant that we being regenerate, and made thy children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by thy Holy Spirit; through the same our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the same Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
A short grace for Christmas dinner
Grace before Christmas dinner can be short: thank God for the food, the people and the hands that made it, thank Him for Jesus and let everyone eat. For more, including prayers for a mixed-belief table, see our Christmas dinner prayers.
Christmas dinner prayer
Lord, thank You for this table and everyone around it. Thank You for the hands that cooked [and the ones who'll clean up]. Thank You most of all for Jesus, the reason we're together today.
Bless this food, bless our conversation and keep us kind to each other. We remember those who are hungry today and those who are missing from our tables. Amen.
The traditional grace (Catholic and many Protestant families)
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
When someone is missing from the table
Lord, we're grateful for this meal and for each other. We also see the empty place where [Name] used to sit. Thank You for the Christmases we had with them. Some of us will laugh today and some of us will cry in the kitchen, and You're welcome in both. Amen.
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
A short Christmas Eve prayer
In 2026, Christmas Eve falls on Thursday, December 24, and Christmas Day on Friday, December 25. If you've been lighting an Advent wreath, the Christ candle prayer is on our Advent candle prayers page. There are more prayers for the whole evening in our Christmas Eve prayers.
A Christmas Eve prayer at home
Father, the house is finally quiet. The wrapping is done, or done enough. Before I sleep, I want to thank You.
Jesus was born on an ordinary night, while most people slept. Shepherds were at work. Hardly anyone noticed. Let me notice. Give our home a peaceful night and a gentle morning, and let tomorrow be about more than what's under the tree. Amen.
A prayer for the candlelight service
Jesus, Light of the world, as this small flame passes from hand to hand, let Your light pass to us. Shine into the corners of me I haven't shown anyone. Shine on the people in this room who came in hurting.
And when we blow the candles out and walk back to our cars, let some of the light come home with us. Amen.
Pray it silently as the flame is passed down your row.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn't overcome it.
Christmas prayers for kids (and Christmas morning)
Before the wrapping paper flies, take five minutes. Children remember what a family does every year far longer than what anyone says once.
- 1
Gather before the gifts
Everyone in one room, still in pajamas. Coffee for the grown-ups helps.
- 2
Read the story
Read Luke 2:1–20 aloud, or a children's Bible version. If you have a nativity set, let the youngest put baby Jesus in the manger and pray the short prayer below.
- 3
Say one thank-you each
Go around the room. One thing each person is thankful for this year. Short answers are fine.
- 4
Pray together
Use the morning prayer below, or let one of the kids pray in their own words.
- 5
Then open the presents
The pause makes the morning feel like Christmas, not just a gift exchange.
Placing baby Jesus in the manger
Jesus, welcome to our house. You were born in a stable, so You won't mind the mess. Thank You for coming to be with us. Amen.
A Christmas morning prayer with kids
Good morning, God. It's Christmas. Thank You for loving us so much that You sent Jesus. Thank You for our family and for our presents. Help us share, say thank you and be kind all day, even when we get tired. Happy birthday, Jesus. Amen.
One-line prayers kids can say
- Thank You, God, for baby Jesus. Amen.
- Jesus, thank You for coming to be my friend. Amen.
- God, help me be kind to my brothers and sisters today. Amen.
- Thank You for my presents, and help me say thank you. Amen.
- Dear God, bless the kids who don't have much this Christmas. Amen.
A rhyming Christmas prayer for little ones
Thank You, God, for Christmas Day, for snow or rain and time to play, for food to eat and friends to love, and Jesus, sent from heaven above. Amen.
A Christmas dinner prayer kids can say
Thank You, God, for this yummy food and for everyone here. Thank You for sending baby Jesus to be with us. Amen.
A Christmas Eve bedtime prayer
Dear God, thank You for tonight. Thank You for Jesus, who was a little baby once, just like I was. Help me fall asleep even though I'm excited. Bless [Mom and Dad] and everyone I love. Amen.
For the parent who was up before the sun
Lord, it's early and I'm already tired, and the day has barely started. Give me patience I don't have on my own. Help me enjoy my kids today instead of managing them. Let them remember a home that was warm, not perfect. Amen.
Christmas prayers for the people you love
Real families come to Christmas with long drives, old jokes, two-house schedules and topics nobody brings up. Pray for the family that will really be there. Our Christmas prayers for family has more, for parents, grandparents and families apart.
A Christmas prayer for my family
Father, thank You for my family, the ones I chose and the ones I didn't. You know each of us: our quirks, our history, the jokes that land and the subjects we avoid.
Bless us this Christmas. Give us real conversations and easy laughter. Protect everyone who is traveling. Let our home feel like a place where everyone is welcome, including the ones who feel like they don't fit. Amen.
When family is complicated
God, I'm driving home for Christmas and already bracing myself. You know which subject will come up before the pie is cut. Give me a calm spirit. Help me listen more than I defend. And if I need to leave before dessert, help me do it kindly. Amen.
For a blended family
Lord, our family looks different than it used to. There are new names at the table and Christmas is split between two houses. Help every child here know they belong in both houses. Give the grown-ups patience with each other while we learn how to be a family. Amen.
For a family member you're not speaking to
Jesus, I'm thinking of [Name] today. We're not speaking, and Christmas makes the distance feel louder. I don't know what peace between us would look like, or if it's possible yet. Bless them anyway. Keep them safe. And heal what You can heal in me. Amen.
If going home isn't safe
If a family gathering means abuse, threats or someone who won't respect your boundaries, you don't have to go. Protecting yourself isn't unloving. Spend the day with friends or a church family, and pray for your relatives from a safe distance.

Christmas prayer for a friend who's grieving or lonely
For many people, Christmas is when a loss feels newest: the stocking no one fills, the ornament they made. Others will spend the day alone, by choice or not. Pray for them by name, and if you can, invite them in. Our guide to prayer for grief has more for the months ahead.
For a friend who is grieving at Christmas
Lord, this is [Name]'s first Christmas without [their mom, their husband, their child]. Everyone else is singing, and they're just trying to get through the day.
Be close to them in the moments that catch them off guard: the ornament, the recipe, the song in the grocery store. Give them permission to be sad, and people who will sit with them without trying to fix it. Comfort them the way only You can. Amen.
God sets the lonely in families.
Often He does it through us: an invitation, a seat at the table.
For a friend who is lonely this Christmas
God, [Name] will be on their own this Christmas. You see them. Let them feel Your company in the quiet hours. Bring a knock at the door, a phone call, an invitation they didn't expect. And if I'm supposed to be that call, give me a nudge. Amen.
If you're the one who is alone
Jesus, You know what it's like when there's no room. Today feels long and the house feels quiet. Be with me. Help me get through the hours, reach out to one person and rest tonight. Amen.
For quieter griefs at Christmas
- Jesus, Christmas is full of babies, and my arms are empty. Hold me in this ache. Amen.
- Lord, money is tight this Christmas. Let what we can give be enough, and keep us from shame. Amen.
Texts you can send
Thinking of you and [Name] today. I know this Christmas is hard. No need to reply.
We'd love to have you for Christmas dinner. There's a seat with your name on it.
Praying for you today. I'm around all afternoon if you want to talk or get out of the house.
If Christmas brings up more than sadness, like thoughts of not wanting to be here, please talk to someone today. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time, including Christmas Day.
Prayer for those working on Christmas
The first people to hear about Jesus' birth were at work. Every Christmas, nurses, paramedics, police officers, soldiers, cooks, cashiers and caregivers miss their own celebrations so the rest of us can have ours.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
For nurses and hospital staff
Lord, bless the nurses, doctors, aides and cleaners working through Christmas. They're missing their own families to care for ours. Give them steady hands and patience with tired, frightened patients. Give them a quiet minute to eat, and a patient who says thank you. And bless their homes while they're away. Amen.
For first responders
Father, keep the paramedics, firefighters, police officers and dispatchers safe today. Christmas isn't quiet for them: car accidents, kitchen fires, homes where things go wrong. Give them clear minds in hard moments, and bring every one of them home. Amen.
- Lord, bless everyone serving food today who won't get to sit down and eat. Amen.
- God, protect the men and women in the military who are far from home this Christmas. Amen.
- Jesus, give our pastor [and church staff] rest after a long week of services. Amen.
- Father, bless the caregivers spending Christmas looking after someone else. Amen.
- Lord, keep the truck drivers, pilots and train crews safe today. Amen.
If you're working on Christmas
Holy Spirit, I'm at work while everyone else is opening presents. Help me not resent it. Let me be good at my job today and kind to the people I'm serving. Be with my family until I get home, and let us celebrate when I do. Amen.
Christmas prayer for people far from home
Exchange students, people who moved for work, families split across countries, people in hospital beds. Christmas can feel very far away when the people you love are.
For someone far from home
Lord, [Name] is far from home this Christmas, [in another country, on deployment, in the hospital]. The time zones are wrong and the food isn't the same. Give them a good call with the people who love them. Bring them someone nearby to share a meal with. Let the carols on their phone sound like home for a few minutes. Amen.
If you're the one far from home
Father, Mary and Joseph were a long way from home when Jesus was born. So am I. Thank You that You meet people in unlikely places. Be my home today, and let me find a little bit of family where I am. Amen.
And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Christmas blessings for friends
A prayer for the friends who've carried you this year, then blessings short enough for a text and warm enough for a card. More are in our Christmas prayers for family and friends.
A Christmas prayer for my friends
Jesus, thank You for my friends. For [Name] and [Name], who showed up this year when I needed them, and who make me laugh when I take myself too seriously. Bless them this Christmas. Give them rest, good food and time with the people they love. Whatever they're carrying into the holidays, carry it with them. Amen.
To text a friend
Merry Christmas. Praying God fills your home with peace this year.
Merry Christmas, [Name]. God with us, and with you.
Praying for a restful Christmas for you and your family. Love you.
Saved you a plate if you want to swing by after. No pressure.
To write in a card
May the peace that came quietly to Bethlehem settle on your home this Christmas.
Every Christmas we thank God for you. This year, we thanked Him twice.
Wishing you the quiet joy of Christmas and the nearness of Emmanuel, God with us, all through the new year.
Christmas prayer for a small group or church
For the last small group meeting before the break, a Christmas party or a service. For more ways to begin a gathering, see our opening prayers for Bible study.
For a small group Christmas party
Lord Jesus, thank You for this group: for every Tuesday night this year, the casseroles that went round when [Name] had surgery and the prayers we're still waiting on. Tonight we celebrate Your birth together. Bless the food, the games and the terrible gift swap.
As we scatter to our families for the holidays, keep us praying for each other until we meet again. Amen.
For a Christmas church service
God of comfort and joy, we gather to celebrate the birth of Your Son. Receive the praise of those who came full of joy. Meet those who came grieving, lonely or worn out.
Speak through the readings and the carols. Let the good news the angels announced be good news for every person in this room. Amen.
A Christmas prayer for the world
Holy Spirit, the angels sang about peace on earth, and the earth still needs it. Be with families in places at war tonight, with refugees far from home and with people sleeping outside in the cold. Comfort them, protect them and stir up the rest of us to help. Let the Prince of Peace be known in every place where peace seems impossible. Amen.
Pray for each other through the break
Before the last meeting of the year, put everyone's name in a bowl and have each person draw one. Pray for that person until the group meets again in January, and send them one text on Christmas Day.
Christmas Bible verses
The whole story is in Luke 2:1–20 and Matthew 1:18–2:12, and it's worth reading aloud. These are the verses people quote most at Christmas, for cards, services and quiet mornings.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah wrote this centuries before Jesus was born. Christians have long read it as a promise of Him.
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
A good verse for the day after Christmas, when the house is quiet. If you want to keep praying into January, our New Year prayers pick up where this page ends.

Questions people ask
What is a short Christmas prayer?
Something as simple as "Jesus, You came for us. Be near everyone I love today. Amen." A short Christmas prayer thanks God for the birth of Jesus and asks Him to be with the people around you.
What do you say in a Christmas dinner prayer?
Thank God for the food, the people at the table and the cooks, then thank Him for Jesus. Many families say the traditional grace, "Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts." Keep it short; the kids are already eyeing the rolls.
What is a good prayer for Christmas Eve?
A quiet one. Thank God for the night Jesus was born, ask for peace in your home and rest for everyone in it, then pray for anyone who is grieving or alone. At a candlelight service, you can pray silently as the candles are lit.
What is a good Christmas blessing?
"May the peace of Christ fill your home this Christmas and all through the new year." A Christmas blessing is a short prayer spoken over someone else, and it fits in a card, a text or a toast at the table.
What Bible verses are read at Christmas?
The Christmas story in Luke 2:1–20 is the most read, along with Matthew 1:18–2:12. Isaiah 9:6, Matthew 1:23 and John 1:14 are also favorites for cards and services.
Was Jesus born on December 25?
The Bible doesn't give the date. Christians have celebrated Jesus' birth on December 25 since at least the fourth century (in 2026 it falls on a Friday), and many Orthodox churches celebrate on January 7 because they follow the older Julian calendar.
