A Christmas prayer for family
For Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026, or any day you have your people around you. Read it aloud, or ask the person who usually stays quiet to read it.
A Christmas prayer for the whole family
Father, thank You for this family. You put us together, and You know us better than we know each other: who's tired, who's worried, who's carrying something they haven't said yet.
You sent Jesus to an ordinary family with nowhere to stay. Come into ours the same way. Sit with us at the table. Be in the laughing and the clearing up and the long talks after everyone else has gone to bed.
Bless the ones who are far away today, and hold close the ones we're missing. Help us be patient with each other. Help us forgive fast and keep no score. Make this a house people are glad to come home to. Amen.
Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Christmas morning prayer before opening gifts
Christmas morning has one moment when the whole family is awake, together and not yet distracted: before anyone touches a present. That's the moment to pray.
And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Before we open the presents
Jesus, before we open anything, we want to thank You. You are the first gift, and the best one. The wise men traveled a long way to bring You presents, and You were the treasure they came for.
Thank You for everyone in this room and for the love behind every box under the tree. Help us say thank you and mean it. Help us be just as happy for someone else's gift as for our own. Amen.
A short one, if the kids can't wait
God, thank You for Jesus, for each other and for every gift today. Help us be grateful and kind. Amen.
When the kids are grown and home again
Lord, they're all under one roof again, and I didn't know how much I'd missed the noise. Thank You for bringing them home, and for the new faces at the table this year.
They're grown now and their lives are their own. I can't fix what's hard for them, but I can bring them to You. Bless each one: their work, their worries, the people they love. Let this morning remind them they always have a place here. Amen.
For the years when the 'kids' are in their twenties, sleep until ten and bring someone new home.
Pray for the giver
Try this once: before someone opens a gift, they say one sentence of thanks to God for the person who gave it. "Thank You for Grandma, who always remembers what I like." It slows the morning down in a good way, and the givers love it.
Christmas Day prayer for family
Christmas Day has its own shape: people arrive, the house gets loud, the grandparents hold court, then it goes quiet. These prayers fit the parts of the day that a table grace doesn't cover. If someone has been cooking since dawn, there's a blessing over the cook you can pray at the table.
As the family arrives
Holy Spirit, they're on their way. Some are driving a long way, some are bringing kids who slept badly and some are bringing news they haven't decided how to share. Get everyone here safely.
When the door opens, let them be hugged before anyone asks about their job. Help me notice who needs a hug, who needs a job to do and who needs to be left alone for a bit. Amen.
Pray it in the kitchen, or in the car before you go in.
For grandparents at Christmas
Father, [Grandma and Grandpa] have seen more Christmases than anyone in this house, and they remember the ones the rest of us have forgotten.
Bless them today. Give them good seats, warm hands and grandchildren who sit with them longer than they have to. Where their bodies are slower this year, be their strength. Let them hear the stories they told us being told back to them, and know that what they planted in this family is still growing. Amen.
After everyone goes home
God, the house is quiet again. Thank You for today. For the moments that went well and the ones that didn't, for the laughing, for the dishes that will still be here in the morning.
Get everyone home tonight in one piece. Where something was said that hurt, heal it. Where someone felt left out, let them know they're loved. And thank You that Jesus came for families like ours, not perfect ones. Amen.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
A prayer for the Feast of the Holy Family
Catholic, Anglican and many other churches keep the Sunday after Christmas as the Feast of the Holy Family. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, December 27. Mary, Joseph and Jesus weren't a picture-perfect family either: an unplanned pregnancy, a long trip, a borrowed stable and, soon after, a flight to another country. That makes them good company for any family to pray alongside.
A prayer for our family, after the Holy Family
Lord Jesus, You grew up in a real family, with a mother who said yes before she understood and a father who got up in the night and moved everyone to safety.
Give us Mary's trust when our plans fall apart. Give us Joseph's quiet courage to do the next right thing for the people in our care. And let our home be like the house in Nazareth: ordinary, sometimes crowded and a place where You were loved and grew. Amen.
Christmas prayer for family far away
The son who couldn't get time off. The parents in another country. The sister working a hospital shift. When family can't be together, praying for each other is one thing distance can't stop.
For family who can't be here this year
Lord, [Name] won't be home this Christmas, and we feel it. There's a gap at the table and the house is a little quieter.
Be with them wherever they are today. If they're with other people, let them be good company. If they're on their own, let them feel You near and let the phone ring at the right moment. Bring us back together soon, and until then, keep us close in the ways that still work. Amen.
To pray together on a video call
Jesus, the picture keeps freezing, but we're all here. Thank You for every face on this screen, even the ones that are mostly ceiling. Be with whoever is cooking on each end, and bring us into one room again soon. Amen.
Keep it short, because the connection might not last. Let someone on each end say 'Amen.'
For a family member serving away from home
Father, [Name] is spending Christmas [on deployment, on shift, at sea], doing a job that keeps them far from us. Keep them safe. Give them good people to serve alongside, a decent meal and a moment of peace today. Comfort the family members here who are missing them most, especially the kids. Amen.
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
If someone serving is struggling
Holidays away can be hard on service members and veterans. In the US, the Veterans Crisis Line is free and confidential: call 988 and press 1, day or night, holidays included.
Christmas prayer for a family that's grieving
The first Christmas after a death changes everything: who reads Luke 2 now, whose recipe gets made, where everyone sits. Old traditions feel wrong, and new ones feel disloyal. You don't have to make it a normal Christmas. Pray honestly, and let each person grieve their own way. When the decorations come down, our prayers for grief can help.
Our first Christmas without them
God, this is our first Christmas without [Name]. Their stocking is still in the box. Nobody knows whether to hang it.
We don't know how to do today. Some of us want to keep every tradition and some of us can't face any of them. Make us gentle with each other today. Thank You for every Christmas we had with [Name]. Hold us when it hurts, and let us laugh when something reminds us of them, without feeling guilty. Amen.
Lighting a candle for the one we miss
Lord, we light this candle for [Name]. We remember [the carols they hummed off-key, the ornament they bought every year, their Christmas morning pancakes]. We miss them here today. Thank You that Jesus came into a world of loss, and that He wept at the grave of His friend. We trust [Name] to Your love. Amen.
Some families light a candle by the empty place at the table and let someone say a sentence about the person they're remembering.
For grieving children at Christmas
Jesus, [Name] is little, and they don't have words yet for how much they miss [Grandpa]. Help them feel safe today. Let them play and enjoy their presents without feeling bad about it, and give the grown-ups patience for the tears that come at odd moments. Hold them close. Amen.
Jesus wept.
If grief turns into hopelessness
If someone in your family is struggling with more than sadness this Christmas, like hopelessness or thoughts of not wanting to live, don't wait until after the holidays. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the US) answers on Christmas Day too.
Christmas prayer for a blended or complicated family
Two houses, two schedules, a stepparent learning their place, a parent who is getting older, a relative everyone worries about. Most families are more complicated than a Christmas card, and God isn't surprised by any of it.
For kids spending Christmas in two homes
Lord, [Name] has two Christmases this year and a car ride in between. Ride along with them. Put a carol on the radio and something good in the bag of presents on the back seat. Let the drive be part of Christmas too.
Give the grown-ups grace at the curb, kind words in front of the kids and the humility to put the children first. Amen.
A stepparent's Christmas prayer
Father, I love these kids, but I'm not their first parent, and Christmas makes that obvious. Some of their traditions don't include me yet. Help me not take it personally. Help me be patient, warm and steady, and let them see over time that I'm safe to love. Amen.
When a parent is getting older
Lord, [Dad, Mom] is slower this year. They asked the same question twice at breakfast, and nobody said anything. Thank You that they're still here, still at the head of the table. Give us patience, and give us the right words for the conversations we keep putting off. Let this be a good Christmas for them. Amen.
For a family member who is struggling
Jesus, we're all a little worried about [Name] this Christmas. [Their drinking, their depression, the way they've pulled away] has been hard on all of us. Help us love them without pretending everything is fine. Show us which conversations are for today and which can wait. And meet them in a way we can't. Amen.
Where to find help
For drinking or drug use, the SAMHSA National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is free, confidential and open every day of the year. If someone is in crisis or has said they don't want to live, call or text 988. If being with family isn't safe because of abuse, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Forbearing isn't the same as putting up with abuse. If being with family at Christmas isn't safe, you don't have to go. Our Christmas prayers guide says more about that.
Christmas prayer for friends
For some people, friends are the family they spend Christmas with. For everyone, the friends who kept showing up this year deserve to be prayed for by name.
For friends who are like family
Lord, thank You for [Name] and [Name]. They know where I keep the spare key and which of my stories they've heard five times. When this year went sideways, they came over without being asked.
Bless their homes this Christmas, wherever they're spending it. Give them a Christmas with nothing to fix, and let them be on the receiving end for once. Amen.
For an old friend you've drifted from
God, I'm writing [Name]'s card and realizing how long it's been. Life got busy and we drifted, but I still care about them. Bless them, wherever they are this Christmas. If there's something hard going on that I don't know about, meet them in it. And if I should be the one to call first, make me brave enough to dial. Amen.
A good one to pray as you write Christmas cards.
For a friend's family
Father, I'm praying for [Name]'s family this Christmas. You know what their year has been: [the new baby, the move, the diagnosis, the job]. Bless their home. Give [Name] patience with the people they love, a few quiet minutes to themselves and a Christmas their kids will remember for good reasons. Amen.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Christmas blessings to text family and friends
Copy one into a text or the inside of a card. Change the wording so it sounds like you, and add the person's name. A blessing that says "I prayed for you" lands differently from "Merry Christmas."
For friends
Merry Christmas, [Name]. You were in my prayers before the coffee was made. You made this year better.
Praying you get a slow, happy Christmas with the people you love most.
Merry Christmas. Praying Jesus is the calmest person in your house today.
Thinking of you today and thanking God for a friend like you.
Hope the whole crew has a good one. Praying for rest for you all this week.
For family
Merry Christmas, Mom [and Dad]. I still put the cookies out the way you taught me. Praying for you today.
So glad God put us in the same family. Love you, and Merry Christmas.
Praying God blesses your house today, burnt rolls and all.
I'm proud of you, [Name], and I'm praying for you this year. Merry Christmas.
Christmas isn't the same without you. Praying for you today and counting down to next time.
For family far away
Your ornament is on our tree. Prayed for you this morning. Call when you can.
Merry Christmas from all of us. We'll open yours on video at ten your time.
Praying for a safe, peaceful Christmas wherever you are today.
For someone having a hard Christmas
Saying [Name]'s name with you today. Praying for you. You don't have to answer this.
However today goes, you're not on your own. I'm praying for you, friend.
Lit a candle and prayed for you today. Here if you want to talk, or not.
A blessing from Scripture
Paul ended a letter to friends he missed with this blessing, and it fits inside a Christmas card. Write it out by hand and add one line of your own underneath. For more, see our New Year blessings.
Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
Pray for your people through the 12 days of Christmas
Christmas doesn't end on December 25. The twelve days of Christmas run from Christmas Day to January 5, and they're a simple way to keep praying once the presents are put away. Pray for one person or group each day, and send them a text saying you did.
- Day 1, December 25: the people in your house today
- Day 2, December 26: whoever cooked and hosted
- Day 3, December 27: your own family, on the Feast of the Holy Family
- Day 4, December 28: anyone grieving this Christmas
- Day 5, December 29: your oldest friend
- Day 6, December 30: the kids in your life, by name
- Day 7, December 31: someone dreading the new year
- Day 8, January 1: your own year ahead
- Day 9, January 2: a neighbor
- Day 10, January 3: your church or small group
- Day 11, January 4: someone you find hard to love
- Day 12, January 5: family far away
- 1
Put the list where you'll see it
Copy it onto an index card and stick it on the fridge. Fill in names, so "a neighbor" becomes a real person on your street.
- 2
Pray at the same time each day
Breakfast works for most families. One sentence each will do.
- 3
Tell them
A text like "Prayed for you today" is the part people remember. For January, our New Year prayers pick up from here.

Questions people ask
What is the best Christmas prayer for family?
One that's short, names real people and gets prayed out loud. Thank God for Jesus and for each other, and name the people who are far away or missing. The prayer at the top of this page takes about a minute.
What are some short and sweet Christmas blessings?
"Merry Christmas. Praying Jesus is the calmest person in your house today" is one. Short blessings work best when they name the person and say you're praying for them. There are 16 on this page you can copy into a text or a card.
What is the best prayer for friends at Christmas?
Thank God for the friend by name and for something specific they did this year, and ask Him to bless their home and carry whatever they're bringing into the holidays. Then tell them you prayed. A two-line text means more than a long prayer they never hear about.
What is the traditional Catholic blessing for Christmas?
Many Catholic families bless their nativity scene on Christmas Eve and their tree during the season, using prayers from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, and the priest may close Christmas Mass with a solemn blessing. The Sunday after Christmas is the Feast of the Holy Family (December 27 in 2026), a natural day to pray for your own family.
How do I lead my family in prayer on Christmas?
Pick one moment, like before the gifts or before the meal, and tell everyone ahead of time. Read a short verse, pray a prayer from this page or let each person say one thank-you. Finish with "Amen" together. It takes about five minutes.
How do you pray for family far away at Christmas?
Pray for them by name and for the specific day they're having: the shift they're working, the time zone, the meal without you. Then call or send a short message saying you prayed. If you can, pray together on a video call.
