A prayer for my family
Pray this one over the people you call family. Slow down at each name.
A prayer for my family
Father, thank You for my family. You know every one of them better than I do: [Name], [Name], [Name]. You know what they're carrying today, even the things they haven't told me.
Keep them safe on the roads, at work, at school and at home. Give them health, and where they're hurting, heal them. Hold us close to You and to each other. Where we've hurt each other, teach us to forgive. Let our front door open onto kindness, for us and for anyone who visits.
I can't fix everything for the people I love, so I'm handing them to You. Watch over them tonight and every day after. Amen.
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
"Family" here means whoever is yours: the people you grew up with, the people you married into, the friends who became family, the kids who split their week between two houses. Pray for the family you actually have.
Short prayers for my family
For the car, the kitchen, the minute before you fall asleep.
- Lord, keep my family safe today. Amen.
- Father, hold us together when we pull apart. Amen.
- Jesus, be in our house tonight. Amen.
- God, You love them more than I do. Take care of them. Amen.
- Lord, give [Name] what they need today, even if they don't ask. Amen.
- Holy Spirit, make us patient with each other. Amen.
Prayer for family protection
Most of us carry a low hum of worry about the people we love: the late drive home, the new school, the phone that goes unanswered. These prayers turn that worry into asking.
A morning prayer for family protection
Good morning, Lord. Before everyone scatters, I put my family in Your hands. Go with [Name] to work and [Name] to school. Watch over every drive, every crossing, every decision made in a hurry. Keep them from harm, and from the hurry that causes it. Bring each of us home tonight. Amen.
When they're out of your sight
God, I can't see [Name] right now, but You can. You know where they are and who they're with. Protect them from danger, from bad choices and from people who would use them. Give them good sense and good friends. Calm my mind while I wait to hear from them. Amen.
For children at school and online
Father, my kids go places I can't follow: into classrooms, group chats and screens. Protect their minds and their hearts. Keep them from cruelty, and keep them from being cruel. Help them tell me when something's wrong. Give them one good friend and one good teacher this year. Amen.
A night prayer over the house
Lord, the doors are locked and the lights are going off. Watch over this house tonight and everyone in it. Give us real rest. Keep us safe from fire, illness and fear. If anyone wakes in the night, let them feel You near. Amen.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
If home isn't safe
Praying for protection never means staying somewhere you're being hurt. If someone in your home is threatening or harming you, please reach out. In the US you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. In an emergency, call 911.
Prayer for family unity
Families rarely fall apart in one big moment. It's usually small things left unsaid and unforgiven. Pray about the small things.
For a family that's pulling apart
God, we used to be closer. Now we're busy, tired and a little guarded with each other. Draw us back together. Help us eat at the same table, laugh at the same jokes and listen when someone is talking. Where there's distance, close it. Where there's a wall, take it down one brick at a time. Amen.
After a family argument
Lord, that went badly. We both said things, and I said some of the worst ones. Calm us down. Show me my part before I point at anyone else's. Give me the humility to say sorry first, and the grace to forgive what was said to me. Don't let tonight's fight become next year's silence. Amen.
For brothers and sisters who don't get along
Father, [Name] and [Name] are siblings, but lately they act like rivals. Heal whatever old hurt sits between them. Help them be on the same side again. Let them be there for each other when we're gone. Amen.
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Forgiving someone isn't the same as letting them keep hurting you.
Prayer for healing in the family
When one person in a family is sick or struggling, everyone feels it. Pray for the person, and for everyone around them. Our guide on praying for someone who is sick has more for hospital stays and surgery.
For a sick family member
Lord, [Name] is sick, and we're scared. You know the diagnosis and every number on the chart. We ask You to heal them. Guide the doctors, ease the pain and give them rest. Help the rest of us know how to help: when to visit, when to cook, when to just sit there. Amen.
For comfort for the whole family
God of all comfort, our whole family is hurting right now. Each of us is carrying it differently: [Name] goes quiet, [Name] gets busy, [Name] can't stop crying. Meet each one in their own way. Make us gentle with each other while we're all worn thin. Hold us close until we can breathe again. Amen.
For old family wounds
Jesus, some of the hurt in our family goes back years: things that happened in childhood, words a parent said, a favorite who got more. You saw it all. Heal what we can't talk about yet. Break the patterns that keep repeating, so our kids don't carry what we carried. Amen.
If your family is grieving a death, our prayers for grief are written for that. For a sick friend rather than family, see our healing prayers for a friend.
If someone is in crisis or struggling with addiction
Pray, and also get help. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any hour. For addiction, SAMHSA's free, confidential helpline is 1-800-662-4357, any time.
Prayer for family provision when money is tight
Money stress gets into everything: sleep, tempers, marriages. It's worth praying about plainly.
When the bills are bigger than the paycheck
Father, You know exactly what's in our bank account, and You know what's due this month. I'm worried. Provide what we need for rent, groceries and the car. Give us wisdom to spend well and the humility to ask for help if we need it. Don't let money make us short with each other or with the kids. Amen.
After a job loss
Lord, [Name] lost their job, and the floor feels like it's moved. Steady them. Remind them their worth was never their job title. Lead them to the next job, and give them the energy to keep knocking. Help our family hold together and spend less on what doesn't matter while we wait. Amen.
Prayer for a marriage under strain
Pray this for your own marriage, or for a couple in your family. Pray the parts about yourself first. These prayers are for a marriage that's distant or strained, not one where you're afraid. If your spouse threatens, controls or hurts you, your safety comes first.
When we're barely talking
God, [Name] and I live in the same house, but we feel far apart. We talk about schedules and bills and not much else. Soften both of us. Help me listen without getting ready to argue. Remind us why we chose each other. Bring back the friendship under the marriage. Amen.
For a couple in the family who are struggling
Lord, [Name] and [Name] are going through a hard time, and their kids feel it. Give them honesty and patience with each other. Lead them to good help: a counselor, a pastor, friends who'll be on the side of their marriage. Protect the children in the middle of it. Amen.
If you're afraid at home
In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233 (or text START to 88788), any time. Getting safe is not giving up on your marriage or on God.
Prayer for a child or relative who has walked away
A son who stopped calling. A daughter who left the faith. A brother lost to addiction. This kind of prayer can last years. These are for the long wait.
For a prodigal son or daughter
Father, You know where [Name] is tonight, even when I don't. I miss them. I miss who they were and who I hoped they'd be. Keep them alive and safe. Put good people in their path. Keep my door open and my heart soft, so if they come home, they find the porch light on. I'm not giving up on them, because You haven't. Amen.
For a family member who's estranged
Lord, [Name] and I don't speak anymore. Some of that may be their doing, and some of it may be mine. Show me what I need to own. If reconciliation is possible and safe, open the way. If it isn't yet, help me let go of the bitterness and keep praying for their good. Amen.
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
Prayer for loved ones: aging parents, family far away and those we've lost
For the parents getting older, the family across the country and the people you remember.
For aging parents
God, Mom [or Dad] is getting older, and I see it more each visit. Keep them safe at home. Give them good days, clear minds and doctors who listen. Help us as a family make wise decisions together without fighting. And let me say what I need to say while there's time. Amen.
For family who live far away
Lord, my family is spread out across [cities, states, countries], and I can't drop by when someone's sick or sad. Be where I can't be. Keep us close across the distance. Give us good phone calls and, when it's possible, a table to sit around together again. Amen.
When someone is about to drive or fly home, our prayers for safe travel have one for the road.
A prayer to remember loved ones who have died
Father, we remember [Name] today. Thank You for the way they laughed, the things they taught us, the recipes and stories we still repeat. We miss them. Hold them in Your love, and let what was good in them keep living in us. Amen.
For family who don't share my faith
Lord, You know [Name] doesn't believe what I believe. You're patient with them, so make me patient too. Let them see You in how I treat them, not in what I say. Give them good things, and in Your time, show them who You are. Amen.
For a blended family
Jesus, our family came together from different stories, and it isn't always easy. Help every child here know their room is theirs, even on the weeks they're at the other house. Give the adults patience with each other and with the past. Keep choosing us, and help us keep choosing each other. Amen.
Morning prayers for family, and bedtime prayers to pray together
Praying with your family doesn't need to be long or formal. Kids will remember that you did it far longer than anything you said. For the holiday table, see our Thanksgiving prayers for family and Christmas prayers for family.
A morning prayer for the family
God, thank You for this morning and for each of us around this table. Go with us today. Help us be kind at school and at work, brave when it's hard and honest when we mess up. Bring us back here tonight. Amen.
A bedtime family prayer
Thank You, God, for today: for [the snow day, Grandpa's call, the game we won]. Forgive us where we were unkind. Watch over [Grandma, cousins, friends] tonight. Help us sleep well, and wake up ready to love each other again tomorrow. Amen.
A bedtime prayer kids can say
Dear God, thank You for [Mom and Dad, Grandma]. Keep us safe while we sleep. Help me be kind tomorrow. I love You. Amen.
A prayer of thanks for my family
Father, I don't say it enough: thank You for my family. For [Name]'s laugh, [Name]'s stubbornness, the inside jokes, the noise, even the mess. We're not perfect, but we're Yours, and we're each other's. Help me notice them today and tell them they're loved. Amen.
but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
How to pray for your family: one family member each day
Trying to pray for everyone, every day, usually ends in praying for no one. A weekly rhythm is easier to keep. Give each day to one person or one part of your family, and pray for them by name for a minute or two. Change the names to fit your family.
- 1
Monday: your spouse or the person closest to you
Pray for their work this week, their health and the thing they're most worried about. Then ask them what that thing is.
- 2
Tuesday: your children (or nieces, nephews, godchildren)
Pray for one child each Tuesday, in turn. Their friendships, their school, their faith and the person they're becoming.
- 3
Wednesday: your parents
Their health, their loneliness or busyness, the decisions they're facing. If your parents have died, thank God for them today.
- 4
Thursday: brothers, sisters and in-laws
Pray for their marriages, their kids and their jobs. Pray for any old rivalry or distance between you.
- 5
Friday: the one who's struggling
The family member who's sick, out of work, far from God or far from home. Give them a whole day of prayer.
- 6
Saturday: extended family and chosen family
Grandparents, cousins, the friend who's at every birthday. The people who are family even if they aren't on the tree.
- 7
Sunday: the whole family together
Thank God for what He did this week. If you can, pray together around the table, even for thirty seconds.
Ask before you pray
Once a week, send one family member a text: "I'm praying for you today. Anything specific?" You'll learn more about your family in a month than in a year of guessing. If your family shares a group chat, a private family prayer chain can keep those requests in one place.
Texts to send your family
Letting someone know you prayed for them often means more than the prayer they never hear about. Copy one and change the details.

Questions people ask
What is a short, simple prayer for my family?
"Lord, thank You for my family. Keep each of them safe today, keep us near You and near each other and meet each one where they need You. Amen." Say each person's name as you pray it.
What is a powerful prayer for family protection?
A prayer doesn't get its power from special words. It comes from the God who hears it. Name each person, name where they'll be today and ask God to watch over them. Psalm 91:11 puts it this way: "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."
What is a powerful prayer for your loved ones?
"Lord, keep the people I love safe today, close to You and to each other. Meet each one where they need You. Amen." Short is fine. What matters is that you name them and keep praying.
What is a prayer for family unity?
Pray for patience with each other, for forgiveness after arguments and for the relationships that are strained right now. For example: "Lord, help us let small things stay small, say sorry sooner and stay on the same side. Amen."
What is a good prayer for comfort for my entire family?
Ask God to be near to each person in the way they need: some need rest, some need to talk, some need space. Pray that you'll be gentle with each other while everyone hurts.
How can I pray for my family every day?
Give each day of the week to one person or one part of your family, and pray for them by name for a minute or two. One minute, one name, every day.
