37 Thanksgiving prayers for every kind of table

Here's a short Thanksgiving prayer you can read at the table right now: "Lord, thank You for this meal and for everyone around this table. For the cooks, the food and another year of Your faithfulness, we're grateful. Remember anyone who is missing or hungry tonight, and fill this time with Your peace. Amen."

The best Thanksgiving prayers are short, name real things from this year and remember anyone who is missing. Below are more, sorted by length and by the table you're actually at: traditional graces, kids, a blended family, an empty chair, a hard year, Friendsgiving and a reading everyone can say together.

Short Thanksgiving prayer before the meal

If you only need one Thanksgiving grace, read this. It takes about thirty seconds and works for almost any table, with family, friends or both. Shorter and longer prayers follow.

A Thanksgiving prayer for the table

Father, thank You for this table and for every person around it. Thank You for the food, for the long hours in the kitchen and for the people who drove a long way to be here.

You've carried us through another year, the good days and the hard ones. Make us grateful, make us kind to each other today and make us generous with what we've been given. Be close to anyone who's missing from this table, and to everyone who's hungry tonight. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Ten-second prayers

For when the gravy is getting a skin and the kids are already reaching.

  • God, thank You for this food and these faces. Amen.
  • Lord, bless this meal and everyone who made it happen. Amen.
  • Thank You, Father, for everything on this table and everyone at it. Amen.
  • Jesus, You're the reason we have anything to be thankful for. Thank You. Amen.
  • Lord, we're full before we've even started. Thank You. Amen.

A twenty-second Thanksgiving prayer

God, we stop for a moment before we eat to say thank You. Thank You for food we didn't have to worry about, for a warm house and for each other. Help us notice the gifts we usually rush past. Bless this meal and this day. Amen.

A one-minute Thanksgiving prayer

Lord, thank You for bringing us together again. Some of us came across town and some came across the country. Some of us are carrying good news this year, and some of us are carrying things we haven't said out loud yet. You know all of it.

Thank You for the meal in front of us: for the farmers and truck drivers, the store clerks and everyone who cooked. Thank You for the people who taught us to give thanks, including the ones who aren't here anymore.

As we eat, help us listen to each other well. Let there be laughter at this table, and patience, and room for everyone to be heard. Amen.

Thanksgiving blessings and traditional graces

These two graces are centuries old and still said at millions of tables. Say them together, slowly.

Bless us, O Lord (the Catholic grace)

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The common table prayer (Lutheran and Moravian)

Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed. Amen.

Some families sing the Doxology ("Praise God, from whom all blessings flow") or a verse of "Now Thank We All Our God" instead of saying a prayer. It's an easy way to let everyone join in.

For blessings to say over the table, write on place cards or text to a friend, see our Thanksgiving blessings.

Funny Thanksgiving prayers

A little laughter before the meal is a gift, especially at a table that's nervous about the day. Keep it kind. At a table with fresh grief, choose a gentler prayer.

  • Jesus, You fed five thousand with five loaves. We've made enough for fifty. Thank You, and please help with the leftovers. Amen.
  • Lord, bless this food, and bless the cook, who has been up since five and would like everyone to know it. Amen.
  • Father, thank You for three kinds of pie. Give us self-control, or at least looser jeans. Amen.
  • Lord, bless the dry turkey and the lumpy gravy, and the people who will say it's perfect anyway. Amen.

A dinner prayer that names this year

Name what's actually happened this year. A new baby, a move, a recovery: people love hearing their own life in the prayer.

For a family Thanksgiving dinner

Father, thank You for every person in this family. For the ones who've been at this table for decades, and the ones who are new this year. Thank You for [the new baby, the new job, the clean scan, the house we finally moved into].

Thank You that we belong to each other, even when we drive each other crazy. Help us honor the oldest, make room for the youngest and enjoy the people in between. Bless this food and the time we have together. Amen.

For more, including a family far away, a family that's divided and prayers to text your relatives, see our Thanksgiving prayers for family.

Thanksgiving prayers for kids

Short, concrete and a little bit fun. Let a child read one of these, or help a younger one repeat it line by line.

  • Thank You, God, for pie and peas, for cousins, cats and autumn trees. Amen.
  • Dear God, thank You for my family and this big, big dinner. Help me share. Amen.
  • Thank You, Jesus, for the people who cooked, and for everyone who came. Amen.
  • Dear God, help me say thank you today, not just think it. Amen.

A rhyming Thanksgiving prayer for kids

Thank You, God, for all we eat, for rolls and corn and something sweet.

Thank You for the ones we love, and for Your care from up above.

Help me share and help me say thank You, God, for every day. Amen.

Add motions: rub your tummy on "all we eat", hug yourself on "the ones we love" and fold your hands on the last line.

Try a thank-you round

Before the prayer, go around the table and let everyone, kids first, say one thing they're thankful for in a single sentence. Then the person praying can fold those into the prayer: "Thank You for Lily's new puppy and for Grandpa's new knee." Let anyone pass. For someone who's had a hard year, "I'm thankful to be here" is plenty.

Thanksgiving prayer for a blended or complicated family

Lots of tables aren't simple. Stepfamilies, exes sharing a holiday, a relative you don't talk to much, old arguments that come out with the pie. You can pray honestly without airing anyone's business.

For a blended family table

Lord, this family came together in ways none of us planned. Thank You for every person here: stepparents and stepkids, half-siblings and the ones who are still figuring out where they fit. Let everyone at this table feel wanted, not just tolerated. Grow real love here, a little more each year. Amen.

A quiet prayer before you walk in

Holy Spirit, I'm nervous about today. Help me be kind without pretending, and calm without shutting down. If old wounds come up, give me the wisdom to know when to speak and when to step outside for air. Remind me that I don't have to fix this family today. Amen.

Pray this one in the car or the bathroom. It isn't meant to be read aloud.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Psalm 133:1 (KJV)

Thanksgiving prayer for the host, and a prayer after the meal

If you're the one hosting, you've been up since before dawn. Here's one for you, one the table can pray over you and one for when the plates are cleared.

For the host, the morning of

Lord, the turkey's in, the list is long and I already feel behind. Before the doorbell starts, I give this day to You. Help me remember why I'm doing all this: so the people I love can sit at one table. If something burns or comes out late, let me laugh about it. Give me energy for the cooking and patience for the questions. And let me sit down and enjoy it too. Amen.

A blessing over the host

Father, thank You for [Name], who opened this home and cooked this meal. Thank You for every hour they spent planning, shopping and standing at the stove. Bless them for their generosity. Give them rest tonight, and let them feel how loved they are. Amen.

A prayer after the meal

Lord, thank You for the meal we just shared and the stories that came with it. Bless the hands that will wash these dishes, and the leftovers that will feed us tomorrow. Bring everyone home safely tonight. Amen.

Thanksgiving prayer when someone is missing

The first Thanksgiving after a death is often the hardest day of the year. A short, honest prayer that names the person gives everyone permission to miss them out loud.

For the first Thanksgiving after a loss

Lord, this is our first Thanksgiving without [Name]. Their chair is empty, and we all feel it. Thank You for every year they sat at this table, for [their laugh, their stuffing, the way they carved the turkey]. We miss them so much.

Hold our sadness and our gratitude together today. Comfort the ones who feel it most. Thank You that death doesn't get the last word. Amen.

When someone is away, estranged or ill

Father, someone is missing today who should be here. You know who, and You know why. Watch over them wherever they are. Heal what needs healing, in them and in us, and keep them in our hearts. Amen.

If someone is missing because being together isn't safe, you can still pray for them from a distance. That's not a failure of love.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:4 (KJV)

Thanksgiving prayer for those far from home or working the holiday

Nurses, cops and firefighters, truckers, soldiers, store clerks, students who couldn't fly home, people spending the day alone. Pray for them at your table, or pray one of these yourself.

For people working on Thanksgiving

Lord, thank You for everyone working today so the rest of us can rest: nurses on a double shift, firefighters, police, the people stocking shelves and driving trucks. Keep them safe. Let someone thank them today, and give them a good meal when their shift is done. Amen.

For those serving in the military

God, we pray for the men and women in uniform eating Thanksgiving dinner far from home, on a base, a ship or a post we'll never see. Keep them safe. Comfort their families and the empty seats at their tables. Bring them home well. Amen.

If you're spending Thanksgiving alone

Jesus, it's quiet here today. Some of that is okay, and some of it is lonely. Thank You for the things I do have: [this apartment, my dog, a phone call I'm looking forward to]. Be my company today. And next year, if it's good for me, bring me a table to sit at. Amen.

Thinking of you working today. Thank you for doing it. I'm praying your shift is calm and you get home safe.

We missed you at the table today and said your name when we prayed. Love you.

A Thanksgiving prayer for gratitude in a hard year

Some years it's hard to be thankful. A job lost, a diagnosis, a marriage under strain. You don't have to pretend it was a good year. You can thank God for what held, and tell Him honestly about what didn't.

When this year was hard

Lord, this year took a lot from us. You know about [the layoff, the hospital, the move we didn't want]. Some days we didn't know how we'd get through, and we're still not through all of it.

But we're here. We have this table, this food and each other. You gave us strength we didn't know we had, and people who showed up when we needed them. Thank You for the mercies we can see, and for the ones we'll only see later. Carry us into next year. Amen.

When you can only find one thing

Holy Spirit, I don't feel very thankful today. But I can find one thing: [Name it]. Thank You for that. Help me find another one tomorrow. Amen.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)

A responsive Thanksgiving prayer to read together

One person reads each Reader line, and everyone answers together. Pass a phone around or copy it onto a card. It's a good way to let the whole table pray, including the people who'd never pray out loud on their own.

A Thanksgiving table reading

Reader: For the food on this table and the hands that made it,

All: we give You thanks, O Lord.

Reader: For the people around us, the ones we see every week and the ones we've waited all year to hug,

All: we give You thanks, O Lord.

Reader: For homes that kept us warm and work that kept us busy,

All: we give You thanks, O Lord.

Reader: For the hard things this year that we didn't choose, and the ways You met us in them,

All: we give You thanks, O Lord.

Reader: For the people we miss today, here in our memory and in Your care,

All: we give You thanks, O Lord.

Reader: For those who are hungry, lonely or working tonight,

All: we ask for Your mercy, O Lord.

Reader: For Your love that hasn't run out, not once, not this year,

All: we give You thanks, O Lord. Amen.

Long table? Split the Reader lines among several people, one line each.

Friendsgiving prayer

Friendsgiving tables often mix people of many faiths and none. If you're asked to say something, keep it warm, short and your own, and don't use it to preach. Thanking God for the people in the room is a gift to everyone.

A Friendsgiving prayer

God, thank You for these friends. For the people who became family when we moved away from ours, and for everyone who brought a dish, even the store-bought rolls. Thank You for the conversations in this room this year, the late nights and the help with moving boxes. Bless this food and this friendship. Amen.

A short one for a mixed table

Before we eat, I'm going to say a quick thank-you to God, the way I usually do. Lord, thank You for this meal and for every person here. I'm grateful for each of them. Amen.

Saying what you're about to do, briefly, lets everyone join in or simply sit quietly without feeling awkward.

Thanksgiving prayer for church, small group and our country

For a Thanksgiving service, a church potluck or the small group dinner the week before. These look outward as well as in.

For a Thanksgiving service

Gracious God, we come together to thank You for another year of Your faithfulness. Thank You for this church: for the meals delivered and the hospital visits, the babies dedicated [or baptized] and the saints we laid to rest. Thank You for those who served quietly when no one was watching.

Make us a thankful people, and make our thanks spill over into generosity. Remember the hungry in our town, the lonely in our pews and everyone this holiday will be hard for. Use us to answer some of those prayers. In Jesus' name. Amen.

A Thanksgiving prayer for our country

Father, thank You for this country and the freedoms we so easily take for granted: to worship, to speak and to gather around tables like this one. We pray for our leaders, of every party, to govern with wisdom and humility. Make us good neighbors to the people across the street and across the aisle. Feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and let our thanks turn into care for each other. Amen.

Thanksgiving has always been a day of prayer as well as a meal. In October 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of November a national day of thanksgiving. Today it's the fourth Thursday: November 26 in 2026.

For a small group dinner, have everyone share one prayer that was answered this year before you eat. If you're leading, our guide on how to lead group prayer has simple formats that help quieter people join in.

Thanksgiving Bible verses

Short enough for a place card. Read one, then pray.

O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalm 107:1 (KJV)
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
Psalm 100:4 (KJV)
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
James 1:17 (KJV)
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
2 Corinthians 9:15 (KJV)

How to lead a prayer at Thanksgiving dinner when you're nervous

Someone just said, "Will you say grace?" and every head turned. Here's how to get through it, and even do it well.

  1. 1

Pick your prayer before you sit down

Choose one from this page and have it open on your phone, or copy it onto a card. Reading a prayer is still praying.

  2. 2

    Use a simple shape

Thank God for the food, thank Him for the people, remember anyone missing or in need and say amen. Four sentences is enough.

  3. 3

    Add one real detail

Name one thing from this year: Grandma's recovery, the new baby, the cousin who flew in. It's the line people will remember.

  4. 4

    Keep it under a minute

Nobody minds a short prayer at Thanksgiving. Everyone notices a long one, especially the person who made the gravy.

  5. 5

If you lose your place, just stop

"Thank You for all of it. Amen" is a perfectly good ending. God isn't grading, and the people at your table love you.

Asking someone else to pray?

Ask them a day ahead, not at the table. Some people would love to; others would rather carve the turkey than pray out loud.
