Thanksgiving blessings for the table and the meal
Short enough to say while everyone's standing, or to write on a place card. Have the host say one, or let a different person read each line.
A Thanksgiving blessing for the table
May the God who carried us through this year bless this table, this food and every person here. May we leave fuller than we came, in every way. Amen.
- Lord, bless this food, this house and these people. We're grateful for all three. Amen.
- May every chair at this table be a place of welcome today. Amen.
- God, bless whoever got up at five for the turkey, and whoever's on dishes tonight. Amen.
- Thank You, Lord, for enough, and for people to share it with. Amen.
- May the laughter at this table outlast the leftovers. Bless us, Lord. Amen.
- God, bless the ones who are here, and the ones we wish were. Amen.
- Holy Spirit, be the quiet guest at this table, and slow us down enough to notice You. Amen.
Thanksgiving blessings for the meal itself
For a blessing over the food, said just before the first plate is passed.
- Lord, bless this food, and the soil and rain and sun that grew it. Amen.
- God, bless the people we'll never meet who grew, picked and carried this meal to us. Amen.
- Bless this food to our bodies, Lord, and this hour to our friendship. Amen.
- Jesus, You broke bread with Your friends. Sit with us now while we break ours. Amen.
Looking for a traditional grace, like "Bless us, O Lord" or "Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest"? They're on our main page under Thanksgiving blessings and traditional graces, with longer prayers before the meal.
Write them on place cards
Copy one blessing onto each place card, and before the meal ask everyone to read theirs aloud in turn. Everyone gets to bless everyone, and people often take their card home. Or print our free Thanksgiving prayer cards, which fold into tents for each place.
Thanksgiving blessings for family, near and far away
Start with the people across the table from you, then the ones who aren't. For parents eating with the other grandkids this year, a sibling overseas, a cousin you mean to call more often, a text won't fill their chair, but it tells them they still have one. For prayers to say with family at the table, see our Thanksgiving prayers for family.
To say to family at the table with you
- To your spouse: Thank you for this year beside me. May God keep blessing this house and the two of us in it.
- To your kids: May God give you grateful hearts, kind words for each other and seconds of everything you like today.
- To your parents: Thank you for every table you ever set for us. May God give you many more Thanksgivings at the head of it.

Thanksgiving blessings for coworkers, clients and neighbors
Lighter on the faith language and still sincere. These work for a team chat, a card on someone's desk or a note taped to a neighbor's door with a slice of pie.
Grateful to work alongside you this year. Wishing you a restful day with the people you love.
Thank you for making this year's work lighter. I hope your long weekend is slow, warm and full of good food.
Thank you for trusting us with your work this year. Wishing you and your family a peaceful Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving from next door. Thank you for the packages you rescued from the rain. God bless your house today.
Grateful for this team. May you all get a real day off, a full plate and no emails until Monday.
Thanksgiving blessings for someone who had a hard year
Some of your people won't feel very thankful this year: a diagnosis, a layoff, a divorce, a first holiday without someone. Don't send them "count your blessings." Send them one of these, which say you see them and you're praying.
I know this Thanksgiving is hard. I'm not going to tell you to be grateful. I'm just praying for you today, and I'm here.
I know [Name] would've had opinions about the turkey. Thinking of you both and praying for you today. You don't need to reply.
You carried more this year than most people know. I'm thankful you're still standing, and I'm praying God gives you rest today.
Happy Thanksgiving, [Name]. I hope today is gentle with you. If it isn't, call me. I'll pick up.
Praying God meets you right where you are today, even if that's in bed with the curtains closed.
I'm grateful for you, even in a year like this one. Especially in a year like this one. Praying for you today.
No big plans needed today. May God give you one good moment, and someone to share it with.
There's a seat at our table and a hug waiting for whenever you're ready. Praying for you this Thanksgiving.
If someone you love is grieving, our guide to prayers for grief has more for the hard dates. If they seem to be struggling to cope, gently encourage them to talk to a counselor or doctor. In the US, they can call or text 988 any time.
Lighthearted Thanksgiving blessings
For the friend who'd roll their eyes at anything too earnest. Kind, a little silly and still a real blessing. Save these for people who aren't having a heavy year.
May your turkey be moist, your pie be generous and your uncle stay off politics. God bless you.
Praying your oven timer and your relatives both behave today. Happy Thanksgiving.
May the Wi-Fi be strong, the game be close and the dishes somehow do themselves. Blessings, friend.
God bless whoever gets stuck at the kids' table this year, especially if they're forty.
May your stretchy pants hold and your second slice of pie be bigger than your first. Happy Thanksgiving.
Religious Thanksgiving blessings from Scripture
The Bible is full of blessings people have spoken over each other for thousands of years. The best known is the priestly blessing God gave Aaron to say over Israel. Each text below fits in a message, with a line of your own.
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24) Happy Thanksgiving. Glad to share this one with you.
"I thank my God upon every remembrance of you." (Philippians 1:3) That's you, [Name]. Happy Thanksgiving.
"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever." (1 Chronicles 16:34) Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
"Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing." (Romans 15:13) My prayer for you this Thanksgiving.
"Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means." (2 Thessalonians 3:16) Happy Thanksgiving, friend.
"We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you." (Colossians 1:3) That's my Thanksgiving prayer for you, [Name].
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19) Thankful for you, and trusting God with whatever this year needs.
"For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." (Psalm 100:5) Happy Thanksgiving to every generation of us.
All of these are from the King James Version, which is public domain, so you can copy them into a card or a post. Want the whole priestly blessing? Copy the verse above.
Short Thanksgiving blessings for cards and captions
For a card, a photo of the table or a post. These read well without a name, so they work under a picture or inside a card to the whole family.
- Grateful for this table and every person who pulled up a chair. Happy Thanksgiving.
- Thankful for the people, the pie and the God who gave us both.
- This year we counted our blessings, and most of them were sitting at this table.
How to send a Thanksgiving blessing that lands
Most Thanksgiving texts are a stock image and a "you too" in reply. A few small choices make yours the one they screenshot and keep.
- 1
Use their name
"Happy Thanksgiving, Sarah" reads like it was written for her. A group text reads like it was written for everyone.
- 2
Add one specific thing
Before you hit send, add a line about them: "Thank you for the meals after the surgery." That one sentence is the part they'll remember.
- 3
Send it early
Thursday morning, before the cooking starts. By afternoon people are buried in dishes and family.
- 4
Don't ask for anything back
For someone who's struggling, add "no need to reply." It turns your text into a gift instead of one more thing on their list.
- 5
Then actually pray
If you said you prayed for them, take thirty seconds and do it. Say their name and ask God to bless their day.
Making a list?
Write down the five or six people you most want to bless this Thanksgiving, then send one text an hour on Thursday morning. You'll reach everyone without it feeling like a mass message.

Questions people ask
What is a good Thanksgiving blessing?
A short one that's personal. Thank God for the person, ask something good for them and add one specific detail: "Thank God for you and for this year of friendship. May today be easy and the pie be good." Two sentences are enough.
What is the best Thanksgiving message to send?
One with their name and one true detail about them. "Happy Thanksgiving, Sam. I still think about the soup you dropped off in March. You're in my prayers today" means more than the turkey GIF in the family chat.
What is a short thankful message to God?
Keep it to one honest line: "Thank You, God, for this year, for these people and for You. Amen." You can say it at the table, in the car or under your breath while the gravy thickens.
What is a religious Thanksgiving blessing?
Many people use a verse from the Bible, like the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24–26, which God gave Aaron to speak over Israel: "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee." Others use a short prayer in their own words that thanks God and asks Him to bless the person.
What's the difference between a Thanksgiving blessing and a Thanksgiving prayer?
A prayer speaks to God, often about the meal and the people. A blessing usually speaks to a person and asks God's good for them: "May God bless you and your family." Blessings are shorter, so they're easier to text or write in a card.
Is it okay to send a Thanksgiving blessing to someone who isn't religious?
Yes, if you keep it warm and about them. "I'm thankful for you, and I said a little prayer for you today" is kind and rarely unwelcome. Skip anything that sounds like a sermon.
