Prayers for safe travel: 33 short prayers for the road, the air and the drive home

A prayer for safe travel (or travel prayer) asks God to go with someone on the road or in the air: to keep them watchful, protect them from harm and bring them home. Name who is traveling and how, pray for the drivers and crews around them and ask for peace for the people waiting. Below are 33 short prayers for safe travel for yourself, a friend or family, plus texts to send before they leave and when they land.

A prayer for safe travel

Pray this one before they leave, with their name in it, while the car is still warming up.

A prayer for safe travel

Lord, [Name] is heading out today, and I can't go with them. You can. Go ahead of them on every mile. Keep them rested and watchful. Protect them from the driver who isn't paying attention, the patch of ice, the part that fails.

Give them patience in the delays and good rest when they stop. Hold the people waiting for them at the other end, too. And bring [Name] safely to where they're going, and home again. Amen.

The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Psalm 121:8 (KJV)

Short prayers for safe travel

One line each. Pray one as they pull away, at the gate or when you check the map and see they're still on the road.

  • Lord, ride along with [Name] today and get them home. Amen.
  • Father, keep the driver watchful and every car around them careful. Amen.
  • Jesus, be in the car with them, every mile. Amen.
  • God, steady the plane and calm the hearts of everyone on it. Amen.
  • Lord, give them patience in traffic and peace in the delays. Amen.
  • Holy Spirit, nudge them to stop and rest before they're too tired. Amen.
  • Father, bring them safely to the people waiting for them. Amen.
  • Lord, You're at the start of this trip and at the end of it. Amen.

Safe travel prayer for yourself

For the moment the bags are by the door and you're about to go. These are written in the first person.

Before you leave the house

Lord, the car is packed and I'm about to go. Thank You for the reason I'm traveling and the people waiting for me. Keep me alert and patient. Help me leave on time without rushing, and stop when I need to. Protect the people I'll pass on the way, too. Go with me, and bring me home. Amen.

When you're traveling alone

God, it's just me this time. No one to swap drivers with, no one to talk to at the gate. Be my company. Keep me aware of what's around me, give me good judgment about where I stop and who I trust and let me get there with energy to spare. Amen.

Prayer for safe travel and protection for a friend or loved one

When someone you love is the one leaving, the worrying usually falls to the person staying behind. Pray it out instead. For prayers for a friend in other situations, see our prayers for a friend.

For a friend who is traveling

Father, my friend [Name] is traveling today, to [place]. You know every road, terminal and hotel they'll pass through. Keep them safe from accidents and from people who mean harm. Give them good company or good quiet, whichever they need. Let the trip be what they hope it will be, and bring them back to us. Amen.

For someone traveling far away

God, [Name] is going far from home, to a place I've never been. You're already there. Go with them through the passport line, the time change and the first strange night. Keep them healthy and wise about where they go. Put people near them who will look out for them, and bring them home when it's time. Amen.

Road trip and safe travel prayer for family

For the long drive with the people you love: before you pull out, the slow middle and the stretch after dark.

Before a road trip

Lord, before we turn the key, we ask You to come with us. Keep this car running well and the tires sound. Make us careful drivers and good passengers. Protect us from other people's mistakes and from our own. Give us good conversation, music we can agree on and a safe arrival. Amen.

For family on the road

Lord, our family is spread across the highway tonight, all heading the same way. Watch over every car. Give each driver a clear head and the kids enough snacks and patience to make it. Keep the cars running and the roads dry. Bring us together at the same table, safe and glad to be there. Amen.

For the driver

Father, I'm the one behind the wheel, and everyone in this car is trusting me. Keep my hands steady and my eyes on the road. Help me ignore my phone, leave space for mistakes and pull over when I'm tired, even if we're behind schedule. Amen.

Driving at night

Jesus, it's dark now and the road is long. Keep my eyes open and my head clear. Give me clear sight through the headlights and the rain. Keep the drunk and the drowsy off this road. If I need to stop, help me find somewhere safe. Get me to a bed tonight. Amen.

Traveling with kids

Lord, the kids are buckled in and already asking how long. Give us patience with each other, quick bathroom stops and enough quiet for the driver to think. Keep every child in this car safe. Let them remember this trip for the right reasons. Amen.

Prayer before a flight, for delays and for fear of flying

Flying takes a lot of trust: you're sealed in, someone else is flying and you can't see the ground. Plenty of people are afraid to fly, and it's fine to bring that fear to God honestly.

Before a flight

God, I'm at the gate. Thank You for the pilots, the mechanics who checked this plane overnight, the controllers watching the sky. Give them sharp minds and a good day at work. Keep this flight steady and safe. Make me kind to the people squeezed in next to me, and get me where I'm going. Amen.

For fear of flying

Lord, my heart is already racing and we haven't even boarded. You know I'm afraid of this. When the engines get loud and the plane starts to shake, remind me that the sky is Yours too, and You're in this seat with me. Slow my breathing. Let me trust the crew who do this every day. Hold me until the wheels touch down. Amen.

For a loved one who is flying

Father, [Name] is in the air right now, somewhere I can't reach them. You can. Keep their plane safe and their connections on time. If they're nervous, settle them. If there are delays, give them patience and a good seat to wait in. Bring them down safely, and let my phone buzz with the news that they've landed. Amen.

When the flight is delayed or cancelled

Holy Spirit, the board just turned red, and the rebooking line goes past the coffee shop. I'm tired and I'm going to miss things I wanted to be there for. Keep me kind to the agent who didn't cause this. Find me a seat, a charger and a little patience. Get me there when the way is clear. Amen.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
Psalm 139:9–10 (KJV)

If fear of flying is stopping you

Prayer helps, and so do practical things: tell a flight attendant you're nervous, learn what normal turbulence feels like and slow your breathing on purpose. If fear of flying keeps you from trips that matter, a counselor can help, and many airlines run courses for nervous flyers.

Prayer for the long drive home after Thanksgiving or Christmas

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and the Sunday after, November 29, is one of the busiest travel days of the year. The days after Christmas are close behind. Everyone is full, tired and in a hurry to get home before work. These prayers are for that drive and for the people watching the cars pull away. For prayers to pray together before everyone leaves, see our Thanksgiving prayers for family.

As everyone heads home

Lord, the house is emptying out. Thank You for the full table, the loud kitchen and everyone who came. Now watch over every car pulling out of the driveway. Keep them awake after a long weekend. Protect them in the traffic and the dark. Let each one text that they're home, and let us all remember this weekend with gratitude. Amen.

For a tired driver after the holidays

God, I'm running on leftovers and not much sleep, and it's a long way home. Keep me honest about how tired I am. Help me stop for coffee, swap drivers or wait until morning if that's what it takes. Keep me safe, and the people around me safe. Amen.

For the table itself, our Thanksgiving prayers and Christmas prayers have graces and prayers for people far from home.

Prayer for safe travel in winter weather

Snow, ice and early dark make holiday travel harder. Pray, and also check the forecast and the road reports before you go.

Driving in snow and ice

Father, the roads are slick and the snow keeps coming. Give me wisdom to slow down, leave room and stay home if I should. Keep my tires gripping and the other drivers careful. Protect the plow drivers and the road crews out in this. Bring me safely to where I'm going, even if I'm late. Amen.

For someone driving through a storm

Lord, [Name] is out in this weather and I keep checking my phone. Keep them on the road and out of the ditch. Give them clear sight, warm hands and the good sense to stop if it gets bad. Calm me while I wait. Bring them in safe. Amen.

Prayer and good sense go together

Praying for safety doesn't mean driving into a storm you'd normally avoid. Delay the trip if you can, keep a blanket, water and a charged phone in the car and let someone know your route.

Prayer for a child going back to college

After a break at home, watching them drive off, or walking them to security, can feel like dropping them off all over again.

As they head back to school

Lord, [Name] is heading back to school today. It was so good to have them home. Watch over them on the way, especially on the stretches where they'll be tired and alone. Help them settle back in quickly, sleep, study and find their people again. Remind them that home is still here, and so are You. Amen.

For a parent watching them go

God, I just hugged my kid goodbye again, and the house has gone quiet. Thank You for the time we had. I can't follow them down the highway, so I'm asking You to. Keep them safe, keep them close to You and give me peace until they text that they made it. Amen.

Prayer for a mission trip or work travel

Some trips aren't for rest at all. Pray for the work they're going to do, and for the people waiting at the other end.

For a mission trip

Lord, [Name] is going to serve with [church or team] in [place]. Keep the team healthy through the long flights, the strange food and the early mornings. Make them good guests who listen before they speak. Let them be useful to the people they're going to serve, and bring them home changed for the better. Amen.

  • Father, another hotel, another meeting: keep me safe, honest and glad to get home. Amen.

Prayer for military deployment

Deployment is a different kind of leaving. Families often want words for the goodbye, the long months and the flight home. Pray for protection, and pray for the people left behind.

For someone being deployed

Lord, [Name] is deploying, and we don't know everything they'll face. Protect them in body and mind. Give them good leaders, loyal friends in their unit and courage when it counts. Keep them faithful to You and to the family waiting for them. Bring them home to us, whole. Amen.

For the family at home

Father, there's an empty place in our house and a time zone we keep counting. Give us strength for the school runs, the bills and the nights when the news is hard to watch. Let the calls come through clearly. Hold us together until the day we're waiting for at the airport. Amen.

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

Texts to send before they leave and when they land

A short text is often the kindest way to pray with someone who's traveling. Send it before they go so they don't read it while driving.

Before they leave

Safe travels today. Praying for you on the road. Text me when you're there.

Praying God rides with you every mile. Drive safe and take breaks.

Praying for a smooth flight and on-time connections. Love you.

The Lord keep you on the road today. See you soon.

No reply needed while you drive. Just know I'm praying until you get there.

When they land or arrive

So glad you made it. Get some rest, and say hi to everyone for me.

You landed. Thank You, Lord. Enjoy every minute with them.

Home safe. That's an answered prayer. Thanks for letting me know.

If you're the one traveling

Heading out now. Would you pray for safe roads and a good visit?

Flying today and a bit nervous. Could you pray for me around 2 p.m.?

If someone is traveling for an operation or treatment, our prayers for someone having surgery and healing prayers for a friend may help too.

Praying Psalm 121 for safe travel

Psalm 121 is one of the Songs of Ascents, traditionally sung by pilgrims on the road up to Jerusalem. Travelers have prayed it ever since.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1–2 (KJV)
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Psalm 121:3 (KJV)

Praying Psalm 121

Lord, I look at the road ahead, and I know my help doesn't come from good tires or good luck. It comes from You, who made every hill this road climbs. You don't get tired, even when the driver does. You don't look away. Keep [Name] in their going out and their coming in, today and always. Amen.

If you'd like to pray for them more fully, how to pray for someone walks through it step by step. For a whole family, our prayers for my family include prayers for protection.

Questions people ask

How do you pray for someone who is traveling?

Use their name and be specific: where they're going, how they're getting there and what worries them. Ask God to keep them watchful and safe, to protect them from other people's mistakes and to bring them home. Then tell them you prayed.

What is a good Bible verse for safe travels?

Psalm 121:8 is the verse travelers have leaned on longest: "The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." Psalm 139:9–10 suits a flight, and Joshua 1:9 is good to pray over someone leaving for a long time.

How do you wish someone a good and safe trip?

Keep it short and warm: "Safe travels. Praying for you on the road today. Text me when you're there." Asking them to message you when they arrive shows you care without making them reply on the way.

How do you say God bless your trip?

You can say it just like that, or try "Praying God goes with you and brings you home safe" or "The Lord keep you on the road today." A blessing can be one sentence and still mean a lot.

Is it okay to pray for safety and still worry?

Yes. Praying doesn't mean you'll stop feeling nervous, and it doesn't replace good sense. Check the forecast, rest before a long drive and keep your phone down. Then keep handing the worry back to God each time it comes.

What if I prayed for safety and something terrible happened?

It doesn't mean you didn't pray enough, or that God didn't care. The Psalms are full of people asking God why. If you've lost someone, our guide to prayer for grief is written for that.
